Me: I should eat more healthily.

Also me: but what if I fried those potatoes in the duck fat I saved in the fridge?

I bought some bacon which was on offer on Ocado and it turns out it is Guinness infused. And actually…

It’s horrible. Really terrible.

Roasted plums with sage, molasses, olive oil, and sea salt. Finished when cooled with red wine and balsamic vinegar. AMAZING.

Wagner really is quite an expensive pass time in London 😳 But at least I’m going to see Siegfried twice next year!

There was a huge battle when the Online Safety Act was going through parliament as to whether “protections” from “legal but harmful” content should apply to everyone – because it’s an obvious free speech threat.

The gov agreed just to appoint to children. That’s now being overturned.
UK Government announcement of additional Online Safety Act regulations, not yet published www.gov.uk/government/n...

Note the direction of travel: OSA requirements that currently oblige platforms to proactively "protect" children from content will be extended to protect adults.

This review is spot on. Freddie is even more of a hero now than he was when playing - a genuine inspiration and providing some (much needed) hope.

Ugh. Reform canvassers at my door. They now know what I think of their party, at least. (And I managed not to be actually rude to them, which was quite difficult).

That’s enough to keep anyone busy…
Today's the feast of St Monica, 4th Century mother of St Augustine of Hippo. Ary Schaffer's 1840s portrait of the two is in Horace Wilkinson's 1936 glass at St Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich. She's the patron of women in difficult marriages and mothers of disappointing children. 1/2

Definitely worth it for a cracking Sibelius 2 from Nelsons and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchestra!
Can’t remember the last time I actually stood up at the Proms.. maybe 15 years?!

Another fascinating, and slightly less irritating, man. He and Bucer are two great figures of the Edwardian Reformation. Sad story about his wife’s remains as well (thrown in the bin, allegedly reburied in Christ Church Cathedral in Elizabeth’s reign).
12 Aug 1542: Pietro Martire Vermigli, Prior of S Frediano at Lucca, house of the Canons Regular of St Augustine flees with companions for Protestant Basel. Vermigli was a leading figure in Edward VI's reformation, fleeing again when Mary took the throne. (NPG)

A fascinating, if ultimately very irritating, man.
12 Aug 1553: John Cheke, former tutor to Edward VI, indicted & found guilty of treason #otd for his role in the Lady Jane Grey affair. Later pardoned & went overseas. On 4 Oct 1556 he made a humiliating recantation of his #Protestant beliefs in front of the Queen's Court (BM)

So at least one good thing has come out of this!
I will be asking to remove 'Queer As Folklore' from the long list for the Polari Prize 2025.
