“Librarians are trained to believe that if information exists, is published, and we can access it, then it’s ours to use. The idea that Indigenous communities might have sovereignty over how their know is shared, taught, or represented often comes as a genuine surprise.”

"Decolonial work isn’t just a workshop topic. It’s a lifelong commitment. It involves building relationships, being accountable, and learning to unlearn."

My position is that archivists and librarians should know and use NAGPRA because:
1) Why can’t records be returned as objects of cultural patrimony
2) Special collections have objects that should be assessed
3) NAGPRA is the bare minimum 4) We should collaborate with our museum colleagues

I know there will be many cool #rbms25 tours happening on Thurs 6/26 at 1p EDT, but virtually you can check out my session “Prioritizing Peoples: Ways Archives and Special Collections Can Facilitate Repatriation” with Wyandotte Nation, Indiana University, and University of Illinois-UC colleagues!

Dr. Ricky Punzlan visited my Collection Development class this past semester to talk about ReConnect/ReCollect so I'm very excited for the plenary at #RBMS25. I wrote down this quote, "Collections are connected. It's the institution that split them up." @rbmsinfo.bsky.social 📜

Ricky Punzalan’s opening session really helped set the tone for #rbms25 for me:
•Slow archives
•De-growing
•Problematic ‘returns’ are instead knowledge sharing or shared stewardship practices
And most importantly…
•BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS 🩷

We don’t know exactly what this means, but if it means what it seems like it means, it's very bad.
