The shutdown delays the jobs report, benefiting the administration. The Fed's blind for its October 29-30 meeting, and VA/NJ elections are under 4 weeks away. Job loss bombshells could drop post-election. I wonder if the frequency of the reports could change.
The government isn’t releasing economic data. Private firms are stepping in.
The government shutdown has prompted private firms to release their own economic data, filling a gap left by the absence of official figures.

Brexit didn’t work out for Britain at all sadly…
Americans might like to hang on to the idea that the benefits of dramatic actions might take a while to appear. That’s because Trump’s tariffs are America’s Brexit.

Conservatives have long denounced the meddlesome Nanny State. Trump is inventing something new—an intrusive, paternalistic Daddy State, writes Gerald F. Seib.
Essay | Trump Is Replacing the Nanny State With a Daddy State
The president is using the powers of his office in an aggressive, paternalistic way without precedent. Is an old form of intrusive government being replaced by a new one?

Unfortunately talent will leave for Europe or China/Asia. The US attraction is disappearing if basic rights are now limited to US citizens only and research being limited to advancing a populist agenda.
This is a sad but interesting question. How many grad students will leave and where, if anywhere will they go ?
Live here and am in grad school here. I have one class where 13 out of the 15 in it are leaving the state or country at end of semester.

That funding loss will really impact the summer where the population is half that so it’s about $2k per person.

To everyone who doesn’t believe Trump would ever use military force to try to take over Greenland or the Panama Canal, remember what Trump said when he first heard of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine: “This is genius.” He called Putin’s invasion of a sovereign country a genius move.

If tariffs are so good at protecting jobs, why stop at levying them on other countries?

Why not levy them on other states, counties, or cities?

It's because trade with others isn't zero sum.

Access to cheaper goods allows people to buy more, creates new jobs, & makes advanced industries possible.
