A #Roman glass bottle, in blue, white, & green glass with gold gilt decoration. It was probably once used to hold perfume or perfumed oil, about 1800-2000 years ago.

Several months ago MAGA were defending the orange felon by saying tariffs won’t ever increase prices and now they’re defending him by saying he’ll decrease prices by removing tariffs. Yes, it’s an idiot death cult.

A selection of Roman glassware, mostly from the eastern provinces & made 1600-2000 years ago - and a clear demonstration of how much the Romans like a bit of colour in their homes!

61 years ago today Detroit’s Gordie Howe set the then NHL record of 627 goals in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. He would go to record 801 regular season goals and 68 playoff goals. What a career!

We lost my best friend Dennis Maywood fifty-five years ago today at his age 20. He never got to live his life. They say time heals, it’s not true. You’re not forgotten Denny.

I stand with the women of Mexico. It is beyond shocking to me that their President could be groped in public. Where is the international outrage? We need to send a message to Mexican women that you are not alone.

In the last month, the FBI has charged players from two different leagues for roles in sports-betting scandals.

Either legalized gambling is exposing corruption that’s always been there.

Or it’s creating it.

Either answer is terrible for sports.

Now we have baseball’s Clase and Ortiz being charged with rigging pitching on top of the NBA scandal. Big money attracts criminals. I don’t have a solution but I feel all the online sports betting and their game time advertising is just wrong.

Loved the Oscar Wilde quote read out at the start of Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction ceremony this evening:

“If you cannot write well, you cannot think well; if you cannot think well, others will do your thinking for you.”

Yay books!

A #Roman helmet with a bit of a decorative surprise - on the back, it features two little mice chasing after loaves of panis quadratus bread.

Made about 1850 years ago, it once belonged to a soldier named Julius Mansuetus - did he choose this unusual decoration? 🐭 (📷Christies) 🏺 #AncientBlueSky

I’ve had a couple of days to process the Jay’s game 7 loss. I don’t know how many years I have left and while the loss still hurts I’m grateful I was able to witness and feel the roller coaster of emotions in what may well be the greatest ball game ever played. I’m not apt to see another like this.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto won 3 World Series games on the road in 8 days.

In my 70+ years of watching baseball I’ve never been as engaged and entertained as this year’s World Series. Baseball broke my heart when Expos moved and last night Bluejay’s loss did it again. I love baseball.
