Colbert not only reads, he is one smart man. He clearly has read and remembered so many important literary works - shows familiarity with authors and poets.

It works! Your review definitely makes me glad I requested it from the library last week. Colbert chose this as his January read ( whatever that means) but that’s where I first heard about it.

I appreciate the quote but I can't β™₯️ it. I will repost though. Thank you. I am reading Timothy Snyder's later (I think) book On Freedom.

Hmmmm - it doesn't seem to want to open for me?

Ha! A new find for me! I hadn't even heard of this one and that's saying something since I read a zillion reviews every week. I have requested from the library. Thanks!

β€œPeople like you to be something, preferably what they are.”

John Steinbeck, East of Eden

I first read it in college. I decided it was time to re-read. Remarkable prose.

Giovanni's eyes sparkled. He knew high quality paint when he say it. He rubbed his hands together with delight.
"Where are the brushes?" he shouted excitedly. "Let's get to work."
"Hold on, Giovanni," smiled Eve. "There's one more thing."
January 9, 2026 at 9:47 PM
(2/ )
Inside his fingers found a flat woven basket. He could only feel the edges of the basket but that was enough to gently pull it out of the cabinet. Inside he found paint jars, filled to the brim with the brightest, most vibrant colors he had ever seen.
"Oh my!" Mary gasped.

Giovanni turned his head and looked with searching eyes at Eve.
"I don't really understand what you mean, Signora, but I will wait. I can be patient. I can let this roll of canvas unfold. The meaning will become clear," he said with acceptance. And then he reached into the higher cabinet.
January 9, 2026 at 9:41 PM
(2/2). Eve opened a drawer beneath the cabinet and yanked out a heavy duty scissors.
β€œHere,” she said to Giovanni. β€œCan you cut off a good sized chunk of that?”
β€œHow much?” he wanted to know.
Eve’s eyes sparkled. β€œAs much as it takes to show starstuff strings,” she answered.
January 6, 2026 at 10:18 PM
(1/ )Eve pulled open the first cabinet door and tugged at the canvas roll in the middle. It was heavy but she was able to wrap her hands around the edges and slowly pulled the roll out. It tumbled to the floor and started to unroll but Eve caught it with her foot.
β€œ Step one, β€œ she chuckled.

After spending nearly six hours on the phone yesterday with Apple Support (and two hours troubleshooting on my own the previous night) and the issue STILL not being resolved, this low tech device is beginning to look very attractive.

Is it under warranty? I'm not clear. I bought the Apple Care plan but I'm not sure that the issue - whatever it is - is covered under that plan. I bought the phone in April , 2024.

I hate sitting in Apple stores. The tech support does screen sharing so I don't see a point in sitting in the mall for all those hours - the mall is noisy and uncomfortable...At least I can be in my own home where it is quiet and when support is doing something where I have to wait, I can read.
