Village trees used to be the centres of village life in China - and also played a political role in the 1900s. The govt wanted to 'prepare for constitutionalism' by building new-style schools, which required cutting down trees and led to many conflicts. See Xu Yao 徐躍, 新式学校の設立と郷村の慣習・民俗をめぐる文化摩擦, 2010
