If #Iran had doubts about going nuclear, today will erase them. War changes doctrines.

Non-proliferation can come only through diplomacy — not destruction.

By crossing all red lines, by seeing nothing beyond bloodlust, Israel is paving the path to catastrophe for us all.

The post-war #German identity hinges almost entirely on unconditional support for #Israel, whatever the crimes, to the point where everything starts looking quite a lot like historical revisionism.
Israel has the right to defend its existence and the security of its citizens. At the same time, we call on all parties to avoid further escalation. Germany remains committed to diplomacy – together with our partners in Europe and the United States. @aussenminister.diplo.de 3/3

As I told @sallyhayd.bsky.social, by decimating #USAID, the US has betrayed #Syrians, pulled the rug from under aid agencies, and, in places like Al-Hol, opened pandora's box of consequences.

Final sign-off on USAID contract terminations. Going out with both middle fingers raised to all their partners and beneficiaries. Pure class.

NGOs in #Syria have received letters from USAID terminating a vast majority of programming, including life-saving food, water, sanitation, and health. By tomorrow morning, all US funded aid will stop, including to camps.

The US is responsible for the consequences to come.

Trump's decision to immediately halt US foreign aid will have catastrophic consequences.

Parters in #Syria have already received "stop work" orders, and some programming in Al-Hol camp have stopped.

In the moment of a generation in Syria, we are being forced to pause when we should be scaling up.

The wreckage & trauma wrought on #Gaza is generational. And we will need the courage of a generation to hold perpetrators, including the Biden administration, to account.

The #ceasefire is a start. But a lasting peace will be possible only when freedom and dignity is ensured for all in #Palestine.

For a decade, humanitarians have urged for neutral, impartial, independent aid operations in #Syria.

For the first time in a decade, we have a window of opportunity to make that a reality. We must not waste it.

#Syria: the map is changing by the hour. Hundreds of thousands are on the move, roads are clogged, and supply chains in shock.

In the coming weeks, humanitarian agencies will need to find new, more efficient ways to deliver humanitarian aid. We must not replicate the mistakes of the past.
December 7, 2024 at 5:05 AM
Additionally, aid delivery in #Syria has been complex & risky for 14 years. Operational, political and diplomatic complexities must not be allowed to outweigh the humanitarian imperative any longer.

Those who need help must be helped without reservation or qualification, location or affiliation.
UN Special Envoy for Syria If we do not see de-escalation & a rapid move to serious political process.. then I fear we will see a deepening of crisis. #Syria will be in grave danger of further division, deterioration & destruction Text of briefing: specialenvoysyria.unmissions.org/sites/defaul...

The backdrop to the current violence in #Syria is a humanitarian crisis already teetering on the edge.

16.7 million #Syrians need humanitarian assistance.

7 million Syrians are internally displaced.

560,000 people displaced from #Lebanon have sought safety in Syria.

The response is ~27% funded.

This is a crucial message. Media narratives often focus on insurgents, the Syrian military, refugees (when they mean IDPs), and vulnerable populations under attack. But there’s little coverage of what people themselves say they need to restore safety, security, and dignity.

What is happening in #Syria must not overshadow what Syrians want.

The political and military landscape is complex, but the demands for safety and freedom are not. We must not let the bullets drown out the voices of Syrians yet again.

#Syria: A morning of deep uncertainty and contradictory emotions for many #Syrians.

In this moment of acute uncertainty, civilian protection must be a constant for all parties to conflict, and humanitarians must be allowed unimpeded access.

550,000+ people, majority Syrians, have been forced into #Syria.

However, recent returns "should not be used to make preliminary policy determinations about regime behavior and “safe” conditions in regime-held areas—let alone anywhere else in the country."
