Three years on from the Jenkins Report, there’s still work to do to create a safe and respectful culture in Parliament. Progress has been made, but change needs sustained leadership and accountability

And with the recent influx of more women & new faces into the parliament, the time to act is now 👇
Three years after the Jenkins report, there is still work to be done on improving parliament culture
Since the release of the “Set the Standard” report in 2021, there has been a flurry of activity in response. But some of it may not be as effective as it could be.

For the first time, women outnumber men in Australia’s federal cabinet – a milestone moment. But as our Deputy Director @eliseinthewoods.bsky.social & co-author @blairwilliams26.bsky.social write, true equity means more than numbers. The job isn’t done yet 👇
Labor women make history by overtaking men in cabinet. So is the job done?
Australia’s cabinet has improved on gender equality, but parliament still lacks genuine diversity across culture, disability, and age.

Our new report, published yday, finds that fewer women than men are running in the upcoming election and they're more likely to be contesting 'glass cliff' seats that are difficult to win and precarious to hold

@eliseinthewoods.bsky.social for The Conversation ⬇️

Running for parliament is still a man’s world, with fewer female candidates – especially in winnable seats
Almost half of candidates contesting this election are women. But for the major parties, women are still more likely to be picked for harder to win seats than men.

Despite decades of effort, women still make up just 20% of the Australian Defence Force

With Australia facing crisis-level workforce shortages in security & defence, @eliseinthewoods.bsky.social argues that gender inclusion isn't a nice-to-have, it’s a necessity

theconversation.com/without-wome...
Without women, Australia’s defence force will struggle to recruit enough people
We need women in the military, including in combat roles. Without them, recruitment targets will fail. It’s not diversity, equality and inclusion: it’s reality.
