The #SmithsonianNationalPortraitGallery was scheduled to feature an exhibition of her work in Sept. In talks with Museum staff, it was acknowledged that the curators had concerns about this painting; they feared provoking Trump. She canceled the entire exhibition
“I entered into this collaboration in good faith, believing that the institution shared a commitment to presenting work that reflects the full, complex truth of American life,” the artist said in a letter sent on Wednesday to Lonnie G. Bunch III, the secretary of the Smithsonian, which runs the Portrait Gallery. “Unfortunately, it has become clear that the conditions no longer support the integrity of the work as conceived.’’ – Amy Sherald

One of the best known paintings by Olga Costa is The Fruit Seller, a colorful oil painting of a sturdy Indigenous vendor surrounded by baskets with more than 50 varieties of fruits and vegetables typical of Mexico: pineapple, mamey, sapotes, guanabanos, cherimoyas, bananas, watermelon, pears, pumpkins..... The work, a public commission that the artist received in 1951, which today belongs to the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, is considered a reference of Mexican modernism and has even adorned the covers of first grade textbooks in the country. However, in Germany, the country where Costa was born, her work is still completely unknown. – Al Dià

Franz's mature works mostly are animals, and are known for bright colors. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art.[2] However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy.
