There is no need for a moral panic about the UK's welfare system.

Far from perfect but recent discourse is nuts

Spending is controlled, not spiralling

Worklessness is near record lows

Giles shares his motivations for training with us as a mental health social worker:

“I think it comes from a place of always wanting to work with people directly, having valued that in my previous roles in the charity sector.

I want to help people get the best out of everything on offer.”

Any changes to PIP eligibility will only be made following the 'Timms review', Stephen Timms announced yesterday.

But this means little if the review is just a tick-box exercise. There must be meaningful coproduction with disabled people and equal decision-making power.

Later today MPs will vote on a new law which, if passed, will cut vital support for sick and disabled people. Even with the concessions the gov. has made to the PIP and Universal Credit Bill, huge cuts are still on the table for new claimants, who will receive less support to meet the same needs.

Anti poverty organisations all unanimously urging MPs to vote against the UCPIP Bill this afternoon, and calling on the government to carry out proper reviews and consultation before legislating.

This is too important to vote through on an act of faith.

That cabinet minister Pat McFadden has done the morning broadcast rounds claiming huge numbers are “signing on” to PIP daily demonstrates why the government has a rebellion on its hands: the disability benefits cuts are not simply immoral - they are based on blatant lies few MPs wish to repeat.

This was a brilliant chat with Rosie Jones.

We talked about her new sitcom Pushers, about a disabled woman who turns to drug dealing after her benefits are cut

It's an experience (minus the drug dealing) that Jones and many other disabled people know well

Our social security system should be here for all of us when we need it. But legislation to cut vital support for sick and disabled people has just been read in parliament.

Ask your MP to join the growing number saying no to cuts, before it’s too late: act.turn2us.org.uk/page/172350/...

Today the bill introducing disability cuts is expected to get its first reading in parliament.

If passed it will cut the income of around 3m sick and disabled people, deepening hardship. Some families stand to lose up to £12,000 per year.

We MUST update our social security system so it's there for everyone when they need it.

We're joining @jrf-uk.bsky.social, food banks and charities to call on MPs to support steps towards an #EssentialsGuarantee to move us closer to a future where everyone can afford the essentials.

Apparently the government regrets making a financial instead of 'moral case' for its huge cuts our social security system. 🤔

Newsflash: There is no moral case for cutting critical support that enables sick and disabled people to live independently, afford the essentials and access work.

Private Eye has found that that 281,000 PIP claimants *already in paid work* stand to lose out under the proposed cuts (i.e the four-point rule)

That's 55% of all PIP claimants in paid work, according to the article

(not my article but I want to flag it)

Good to see the first multi-year settlement for local crisis support in Spending Review, with govt's new Crisis and Resilience Fund supported by £1bn a year (replacing the Household Support Fund). Long-term funding will allow councils to target preventative support to the most vulnerable households.

It’s great to see investment in the NHS, social housing, and free school meals. But it makes no sense to cut disability benefits at the same time. Making disabled people sicker and poorer will only increase pressure on the NHS, push them out of independent homes, and deprive their children.
