I should probably post again my theurgic incantation for heracles
It occurs to me (& this is scarce an original thought) that the Gray Ones are an aspect or guise of the Fates.
I think that the way they share their eye & tooth supports this interpretation.
The tooth a clear echo of Atropos' scissors, & the eye is a stand in for Lachesis' measurement.

I wonder if the reason for the popularity of the medieval in the popular imagination of the fantastic is as a result of its disavowal by "renaissance" thinkers which sought to link themselves to Antiquity. To have so exiled the medieval makes it into a neverwhen; a timeless time, the space of myth
