As Konoha rebuilds after Orochimaru's invasion, Team 7 receives a mission to investigate recent mercenary activity and verify if the mercenaries pose a threat to Konoha's security. The investigation uncovers something much more strange going on in the area, but they can't afford to take the time to dig into it right away. At least, not until they have more intel and a secondary mission is assigned—one which will force new boyfriends Kakashi and Iruka to get much closer on a much tighter schedule than they planned. While Kakashi focuses on missions and his developing relationship with Iruka, he tangles with his own personal demons. Tsunade and his friends are putting pressure on him to address his self-harm, no longer content to let it slide. With new leadership in Konoha and a particular missing-nin resurfacing, Kakashi has the opportunity to shine a light on the dark history of transphobia in Konoha and finally make long-needed changes.

Kakashi curls his fingers and pulls back his arm. Guy knows far too much about him; of course he'd spot the moment he does something a little more reckless than usual. "Yeah, well. The attack. Torture. All that stuff. You're not exactly in top shape, either. When's the last time you slept for more than four hours?" Unlike Kakashi, Guy actually gets a solid amount of sleep, but he's been working himself to the bone and Kakashi could spot the fatigue the day his schedule shifted. "We have to look out for each other. What's weighing on you, Kakashi?" Kakashi puts his hands in his pockets and stares up at the stars. "Maybe everything I've been through is piling up and I'm starting to break."

i have mayyyyyybe? written half or two thirds of my first time travel kakashi fic, plot-wise. i'm honestly not sure where i'm going with it or how it will end, and i only have one more big event planned.

BUT i need to go back through to edit and add scenes to really flesh it out.

The two of them look at Kakashi again. "It was traumatic," Kakashi says flatly. Hopefully that's enough to convince them that his chakra network endured severe damage across only a matter of hours.

Kakashi knew from the start that the tattoo on his shoulder would give him away. "You don't think I'm a foreign operative?" "You've got a Konoha accent. You've been here for days without sending word or leaving even after recovering enough to travel, so you're not active ANBU. And you're certainly not retired." "Are you here to bring me in?" "I don't have an obligation; I'm not ANBU," Jiraiya says with a shrug. "But I am curious why a man from Konoha is in our book without a real name." Kakashi looks up at the stars again. He wonders if they're the same stars he saw in his last lifetime. "I'm not supposed to be here."

Talk to your damn team, Kakashi. And go eat with them. They need their mother hen." Jiraiya's voice softens at the end. "He's kind of the opposite of a mother hen," Naruto mumbles. "I should probably…" Jiraiya puts a hand against Kakashi's back and nudges him forward. "Teuchi doesn't give a damn about anyone's scars. Go." "I was planning to meet Iruka," Kakashi says. "What a coincidence, considering he's planning to eat with the team, too." Kakashi is apparently not going to get out of the forced cheering-up activity. Or guilting activity. It will entirely depend on how Iruka looks at him. He presses a hand to his eye briefly. "Give me five minutes."
