Having a day job doesn’t mean you’re not a proper writer. Writing for children doesn’t mean you’re not a proper writer. Being unpublished doesn’t mean you’re not a proper writer.
Oh, and there’s no such thing as a proper writer. Only writers, and those who don’t.
Don't ask yourself if a story has been told before: it has. Ask yourself how you're going to tell it in a way that is unique to you.

Wrting a short story is no easier than writing a novel. In fact, it's somewhat harder, because the form is less forgiving: you can get away with a certain amount of bagginess in a novel, but a short story needs to be perfectly structured; not a word out of place.

Your narrative voice is a camera. Distant third person is remote, viewing from a distance. Close third person comes right up to the characters, sometimes even guessing their thoughts. First is a POV shot, watching through the eyes (and mind) of the character.

To make your readers care for your characters, you have to make it clear what or who your characters most care about.

Comics are reading.
Genre is reading.
Fanfic is reading.
Text-based games are reading.
Audiobooks are reading.
Braille books are reading.
Non-fiction is reading.
Picture books are reading.
There is no single way to read, nor is any reading style more worthy than another.

Not everyone will love you. Live with it. All writers do. All you can do is your best, most honest work, and send it out into the world in the hope that it connects with someone. What they see in it after that is often more about them than it is about you...
