Hospital consultant working in medicine for older people. Late diagnosis AuDHD and working through this. Very happily married and mum to 4 wonderful boys.
Oddest unanticipated side effect of new ADHD meds - I still feel physical hunger but don’t fancy eating. Eating 3 meals a day as have family I also cook for but complete loss of need to snack. My huge sugar cravings seem to have gone for first time in my life!

This video made me smile and cry.

Looking the way I look, I know some of my patients may be apprehensive about being honest with me for fear of prejudice.

That's why I always wear a symbol on me to reassure them that I am accepting of everyone.

It's not virtue signalling.
It's safety signalling.
For noen kan et lite regnbueflagg bety at vi føler oss tryggere. Man ser flagget og tenker; « her kan jeg passe inn»
En enkel måte å vite at jeg også blir satt pris på.

Veldig fin video

Masking isn’t hiding who we are.

It’s performing a version of ourselves the world finds acceptable.

It's exhausting.

And when that mask becomes how others know us,
it poisons our relationships - and erodes our self-trust.

It doesn't help build relationships.

It builds a hologram.

Being autistic means that:

some people see you as totally incapable of thought

some other people seeing you as malevolent in order to specifically inconvenience them

some others see you as a hidden genius who disappoints them

when in reality, most of us are just trying to survive best we can

The DSM: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder may appear to have a reduced interest in social interactions

Autistic people (after years of being misunderstood, mischaracterized, and bullied): You think??

"You need to get out of your comfort zone sometimes"

Autistic me: When do I ever get to be in a comfort zone? What is that like? I will tell you what it's like. Forcing yourself to be a certain way to please others by not being yourself. This doesn't end well.

So I'm fine as I am thank you.

Just a gentle reminder to others: If you get officially diagnosed you aren't magically accepted. Not in my experience anyway. The standards of people don't change. Infact, if you say you're autistic, most don't care, some will shun you immediately, some will carry on to treat you like a 4 year old.

Many autistic people are often highly aware of whether other people like us or not. If someone dislikes us we may be unsure as to the particular reason(s) why and what (if anything) we are expected to do about that, but that’s not to say that we don’t know how they feel about us.

"You're just claiming to be autistic for attention"

There are literally millions of ways to get attention these days. Why would anyone choose autism of all things? Maybe it's because they're actually autistic and autism is the easiest topic for an autistic person to talk about. 😆

Being autistic means always feeling tired:

Tired of feeling like you don't fit in
Tired of trying to fit in
Tired of socialising
Tired of feeling exhausted after changes in your routine.
Tired of being told you’re not normal
Tired of trying to be normal
(whatever that is)

Tired of being tired.

Having spent 3 months worrying what complaints about my behaviour could be bad enough to try to remove me from leading a team I set up, not sure if I should laugh or cry that they were primarily people upset they were told not asked to comply with the same rota system as the rest of the department!

Week 3 phased return after 2 months off with autistic burnout. Much harder than I’d anticipated with worst shutdown I’ve had in years in week 1 and absolute exhaustion by the weekend. Still determined to do it but hard to accept I can’t just spring back into action.

Week 2 of phased return to work after 2 months off with autistic burnout. Had my first autistic shutdown in ages after the first full day back. Spent today resting in hope that I’ll manage tomorrow without another shutdown. Hate how they impact my family and glad they are rare.

Can anyone who is a UK consultant tell me if there is fixed time allocation for DCC admin? Can’t find anything in national guidance and trust seems to have decided to cut from 1.5 PAs to pro-rata of 1.5 for 7 PAs DCC. Also, if work shifts rather than on call, presume OOH counts in total?

A typical experience for people after a late autism diagnosis is a sense of grief:

For lost opportunities.

For lost friendships.

A sense of sadness that if someone had noticed earlier and had been diagnosed earlier, they might not have faced so many struggles & challenges.

The first person to be diagnosed as autistic passed away last year at 89 years old. Please remember this if you find yourself being hypercritical of “all these people being diagnosed as autistic now”. The first documented clinical autism diagnosis was made less than 100 years ago.

It’s A Wonderful Life’ #rose. I know, rather an ironic choice for such a wild, stormy day.
After a wet & windy night, we’ve relative calm here on the south coast. As #StormEowyn rampages across the country, we hope you are all safe. Please take care. 🌱

If you identify as an introvert and find social interactions draining, are relieved when social commitments are canceled last minute, and you literally can't get enough alone time... you MIGHT want to look into autism. 😄

There are a lot of people who say they don't want to be defined by being Autistic, but honestly, I wish I could go back to every adult who thought I was rude or lazy, and explain to them that, I was doing the best I actually could, with limited understanding I had of myself.
