Thanks to the Long Long Trail I now know how much of a drop in income my grandfather took in 1914 when he rejoined the Army. Even with his promotion to Sergeant within 5 months he still had a shortfall of 6 shillings a week

I always do this and follow up the names to, for example, local newspapers. There are often letters or other info that give more detailed insight than a war diary could.

Browsing the CWGC database today by regiment and date of death it suddenly hit me that I could use it to fill in the names of those frustratingly unnamed OR casualties in war diary entries Not necessarily that precisely but a start /1 #Remembrance #familyhistory

Have been revisiting daughter's Scots who went to Quebec recently Found an ancestor of theirs one George Burray who turns up in the British military records as Barry, Berry, Burry. Luckily he was a Chelsea pensioner but with 3 separate attestations 1799 into the Elgin Fencibles /1
