This is absolutely terrible news.
With the shifting regulatory climate (i.e., antivax ratfuckery), Moderna has withdrawn their application for their eagerly anticipated COVID-flu combo vaccine. This vaccine offered better protection than getting each shot separately.

AAAS: "Cows get second bird flu virus." Dairy cattle in Nevada have now experienced documented infection with a 'second variant of the bird flu virus that has decimated poultry and wild birds, a finding that could complicate efforts to control the disease + prevent it from spreading to humans.'

All of this is happening without yet any widespread or human-to-human H5N1 transmission. "Since H5N1 began racing through dairy herds across the country in 2024, scientists had until now identified only a single viral lineage responsible, known as clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13." Not exactly a catchy name, but rigorously specific. "On 31 January, a national milk testing program discovered the Nevada cattle had become infected with the D1.1 genotype of the same clade, which has circulated widely in wild birds." It has only caused 3 infections in humans, 1 of whom works on a Nevada dairy farm, 'but no evidence suggests D1.1 transmits between people or is more dangerous than other H5N1 variants.' Scientists have no data yet on whether a cow that has been infected with B3.13 and recovered will have immunity against D1.1. Cross-immunity, if you will.
