The state of Kansas gives ~$9 million of its sports betting operator taxes to subsidize the Chiefs new stadium. Meanwhile, gambling addiction services get only a ~$200k annual bump from the same tax revenue stream.

Imo, noteworthy that this Kalshi partnership comes in the wake of the City of Chicago looking to raise taxes on DK and FD, and their lobbying group threatening to block access to the apps within city limits. The Blackhawks could be hedging here. Regardless, bad for the sport and consumers.
The number of fans who believe sports are rigged will only keep rising because individual teams are now partnering with prediction markets that are less regulated than sports gambling companies.

Great work by @dannyfunt.bsky.social reporting that CNN is actually being paid to show gambling odds in its "news" coverage (using quotes because idk if gambling odds even count as news). Another way to look at it: Kalshi is desperate for legitimacy in face of legal troubles over sports betting.

New: Yesterday, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that states are seeing nearly $1 billion in tax revenue per quarter from legalized sports gambling.

Based on studies showing the Pareto principle in online gambling, most of the tax revenue comes from people suffering from addiction.

Opinion: Setting aside regulatory concerns, what provides the necessary liquidity for people “in the know” to place bets and give “prediction markets” their forecasting efficiency? Compulsive use by “retail” bettors. As with all gambling products, it just doesn’t work without addiction.
