Do you have red-cyan anaglyph glasses? Try this video below for an amazing 3D effect on the asteroids in Gaia DR3.

Asteroids, other SSOs, and particle sets in general will get a much needed improvement in visual fidelity in #GaiaSky 3.7.2. We can now shade them (kind of) realistically while maintaining the high frame rate. In the video, we show the ~150.000 asteroids in Gaia DR3.

What will Earth look like when Artemis II goes to the Moon? Which "phase"?

Monday night at 8:00 PM ET, I'm doing a live stream showing you a cool free app called Gaia Sky. I'll show you the possible ways the Earth and the Moon will appear.

Testing #GaiaSky VR with the Valve Index and an RTX 5080 (laptop). Performance is very, very good!

Working with a contributor on the Simplified Chinese translation of #GaiaSky. This requires some re-engineering in the UI system, but we're getting there.

I just got a new laptop for our VR demonstrations with an RTX 5080 16GB. With base #GaiaSky and default datasets, it's getting over 700 FPS. Let's see how it does with VR😅

📖 We have updated the #GaiaSky documentation with a new theme and we've done a little bit of restructuring. It should flow better and look cleaner now. Give it a try!

Today is testing day, so it's time to dust off the Valve Index and see how much VR on Linux has improved since the last time I tried (it was underwhelming). With the Steam Frame on the horizon, I'm kind of excited to see the progress.

#GaiaSky will get an interactive UI accent color in the next version, dropping the static UI themes system. 👀

🚀 Gaia Sky server is BACK!

After a few months of downtime, our main server is once again accessible from the outside. You can now access installers, datasets, and documentation.

Thank you for your patience during the downtime.

I just saw this on HackerNews and it is so cool and impressive. Gaia Sky uses SDFs for some nebulae, but this work brings the technique to a whole new level. Well done!

I just released my video about the engine (and game) I've been working on.

The engine is based on dynamic SDFs, and the video describes how it works and what it makes possible.

Link in the reply!

This is my first YouTube video and it took forever - please repost!

🚨 Our server remains completely blocked from external access due to the university IT department's ongoing network restrictions. This situation is extremely disappointing for our team and community.

Here are some interesting screenshots of our usage and download statistics. Note the sharp decline at the time where the server downtime starts.

Service update: Our server is still down due to uni-wide security measures. Hoping for a fix soon... I was planning a pre-Christmas release, but that's off the table for now. Full details:

I made Andomeda with the new procedural galaxy generator in #GaiaSky 🌠
November 25, 2025 at 2:15 PM
Even though macOS does not support OpenGL 4.3, the new procedural galaxy generation in #GaiaSky will also work on these systems via a fallback option to CPU processing. It is (just a bit) slower than the GPU version, but it works.

🚧 Our server hosting Gaia Sky builds, datasets, and documentation is currently inaccessible due to precautionary measures by the university's IT team. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide updates as soon as we have more info.

I've been working on the procedural generation of galaxies in #GaiaSky for a while now. The system is already able to generate different morphologies, but I'm still tuning it.
Below is an example of 3 random galaxies for every Hubble sequence morphology.

The compute shader that generates galaxies gets more and more features. We can now design pretty cool shapes interactively.

The new Steam Frame looks very promising for demos. If the graphics chip in the headset is powerful enough, it could run #GaiaSkyVR without the need of a PC. It already runs well on the Steam Deck, so there is hope. We'll need to wait for the specs to come out.
