Re Chancellor Merz's cityscape comments: The Austrian far-right Freedom Party is jumping on the bandwagon and has now posted a short video, "comparing" the old vs the new cityscape.
Quite remarkable how a "conservative" politician's remark resonates so strongly with the far right and their agenda.

When the excruciatingly loud fire alarm goes off in the apartment complex at 9.30 at night, naturally, your first line of action is to get into the car and drive off to get a milkshake until this spectacle is over.
We've become smarter since moving here, but not in the way most people would think.

Such a stupid headline, not even two weeks after this banger, btw (which likewise engages with Helen Andrews' "ideas")

The German 'Die Zeit' is just as horrendous as the NYT and others when it comes to clickbait-y coverage of the far right.

If you already insist on having lunch with and giving a politically irrelevant ex-chancellor of a small EU country a platform, then at least do everyone a favour and consult political scientists to comment on and fact-check some of his outlandish poli-sci claims.

There's no point in trying to justify or explain away what Merz's comment about the German cityscape really meant or whom he was referring to. It resonated with the extreme right, who now prominently use the term in their discourse and propaganda. That tells you all you need to know.

This data on Gen Z's gender divide is fascinating.
Gen Z men and women largely agree on what it takes to get ahead in a job and share the top 3 markers of personal success. But then differences emerge: being married and having children rank 7th & 8th for Gen Z men and 9th & 10th for Gen Z women. 1/

Poll: Gen Z's gender divide reaches beyond politics and into its views on marriage, children and success
Gen Z men who backed Trump in 2024 rated having children at the top of a list of choices of how to define personal success. Gen Z women who backed Harris rated it second to last.

This does have international ramifications too, as far-right parties abroad can claim that the term is not “extremist” because the U.S. government also uses it.
Just the Department of Homeland Security, using a term hijacked and popularised by the extreme-right Identitarian Movement.

I'd be curious to learn what kind of "training exercises" these 19 people conducted with 50 semi-automatic weapons on a farm in Upper Austria, and why 15 of them fled into the house when the police arrived, but well, surely nothing weird going on there?
