The barkeep sets a steaming mug on the counter. His eyes are sharp behind his glasses as he watches Goro take his first sip.

“It’s delicious,” Goro says. Somehow, it isn’t a lie. “May I know my barista’s name?”

The barkeep’s eyes crinkle as he smiles. “Ren. Glad you like it.”

Ren. Goro turns the name over in his mouth along with the coffee, savoring both. The bitterness of hatred only enhances the flavor.

She took a steadying breath, and forced herself to relax rather than flinching away, letting her hand settle deliberately against his on the ground. At first there was no reaction, no indication that he was even aware of the gesture. And then, slowly, almost hesitantly, his touch withdrew…

...only to shift closer behind her until their arms crossed in the reduced space between them, shoulders pressed together.

It was not quite an embrace, in fact it fell well short of that. But it was warm — the press of the inside of his shoulder against the back of hers, the brush of his hair against her ear if she leaned her head just so, the bracing presence of him beside her. There was an undeniable sense of comfort-seeking from it that threatened to rend her open, were she not fully aware of the same laid bare in the mirror of her own heart.

Hi, Kupo here! Very excited to be a part of the library! I enjoy reading different genres and trying new things, but am always a sucker for interesting characters, angst, the power of friendship and bittersweet endings. If it made me cry (which isn't very hard to do), it did something very right! At the moment I think my favourite book is Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - the dramatic finale to the Six of Crows duology!

“Hey, Ren?”

Ren turned to look at him, and Goro took his chance. He launched the water he had gathered in his arms up toward Ren with as much force as he could, and he had the pleasure of seeing him taken completely off-guard before his face was covered with seawater.

He cackled as Ren spluttered, and there was a flash of anger in his face before he started laughing too. He swept his arm in a wide arc, sending a wave of water that clocked Goro in the jaw even as he turned his face away, and they started heading deeper into the water as they splashed each other with increasing force. The other people around gave them a wide berth, not keen to get caught up in the battle, and soon it seemed to be just them in the water. But as Goro stepped further away from Ren to get a better angle of attack, he slipped.

His sure feet got caught in the shifting sand below, and Goro was unable to readjust before he started falling backward. He screwed his eyes shut against the inevitable saltwater, but before he could hit the waves one hand grabbed his wrist and another splayed across the small of his back, catching him just in time.

Goro opened his eyes to the sight of Ren’s face consuming the sky, the eclipsed sun making the ends of his damp, dark hair glow, and as Goro stared into the face of this new sun he was Icarus, lost in the light.
