Even before she announced what is frequently described as a “longshot” bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nod, Hong was traveling the state, recruiting and campaigning for legislative candidates, speaking at local events for county Democratic parties and progressive groups, and rallying activists on behalf of economic, social and racial justice. Hong’s tireless approach to politics has also been reflected in her legislative agenda. Though she has served three terms in the Legislature as a member of the Democratic minority, the Madison Democrat has been ambitious and often visionary. Introduced two years ago, before most Democrats recognized that their party was losing support because of its failure to adequately address what’s come to be known as “the affordability crisis,” Hong was on the case. Her legislation was written in recognition of the fact that, “Nobody should have to choose between paying their bills and taking care of their health or family.” We do believe that Hong’s approach has been notable. Her legislation attracted support from 25 Democratic representatives and 10 state senators... when it was introduced. And it continues to be discussed as a model plan by Wisconsin activists who have worked on family and medical leave issues.
