Founded in 1969 by Marjory Stoneman Douglas, our mission is to protect, preserve & restore the only Everglades in the world. Science-driven, solutions-focused.
On January 13, Florida lawmakers will convene in Tallahassee to start the annual 60-day legislative session, but the onslaught of bad bills has already begun. Friends of the Everglades is focused on 5 priorities that protect clean water, public health, and the Everglades:

After much delay, our case against “Alligator Alcatraz” is finally back on schedule — and heading to court in spring 2026.

The harm from “Alligator Alcatraz” continues, but we’re not backing down.

With the facts on our side, we’re optimistic we can end this once and for all.

As the holiday season begins — and all of the consumption that comes with it — let’s remember the point.

A healthy Everglades ecosystem with clean air and water and thriving populations of native flora and fauna is so incredibly important.

Florida must begin planning *now* for the next phase of Everglades restoration to ensure momentum isn’t lost once CERP projects are complete, said Friends' policy director Gil Smart to the South Florida Water Management District governing board at a recent meeting. 1/2

What do Florida lawmakers think about “Alligator Alcatraz”? Eve Samples spoke to a variety of politicians this week in Tallahassee and found out. Both Republicans and Democrats seem to be in agreement about one thing — it’s an inefficient waste of taxpayer money. 💸
