Weather word of the week: shinshin.

Shinshin (pronounced sheensheen) is a Japanese onomatopoeia that describes the absence of sound during and after a fresh snow fall. Fresh snow absorbs sound waves, making it seem quieter outside.

A recent study analyzed the climatology of 1995-2024 United States warm-season derecho events and the potential associated climate forcing. They identified 147 warm-season derechos during the 30 year time frame, resulting in an average of 5 derechos per warm season. (1/2)

We analyzed 593 locations across Europe and identified the locations with the highest and lowest forecast low temperature accuracy for the next three days.

The best places to live for reliable low temperature forecasts are in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal. (1/2)

Weather word of the week: flash freeze.

A flash freeze occurs when a strong cold front moves through with rain, then temperatures rapidly drop 20 to 40 degrees and the wet pavement freezes. This can cause roads to become slick quickly.

Weather word of the week: snow squall.

Snow squalls, often associated with strong cold fronts, are a key wintertime weather hazard. They move in and out quickly, & typically don’t last long. The sudden white-out conditions combined with falling temperatures produce icy roads in just a few minutes.
