It was like waking up in a fire. Everything hurt. She couldn’t even scream, the pain was so overwhelming. It just hurt, hurt, hurt — so much she could barely think. She couldn’t see — was she blind? It’ll be better soon, I swear.” The whoosh of a pump and she felt herself hurtling toward unconsciousness. But she recognised that voice. She had loved that voice, that person, once upon a time. Her dreams were a horror reel. She watched the other tributes murder each other, over again and again; she watched herself kiss Coryo; she watched his desperation in the woods in the rain. “You’re safe here with me, Lucy Gray.” Liar. Liar. Traitor. “You saved me, Lucy Gray.” Murderer. She slipped in and out of consciousness; the only sounds she ever heard were clinical beeping of the machines attached

Make sure your pets are well-trained — keep them on a tight leash. Reward them sparingly. That was one lesson from his apprenticeship under Dr. Gaul that Coriolanus had taken to heart. A lesson that he found always applicable. She was sitting on the cot, wrists and ankles shackled to the legs of the bed, her wings bent at a wrong angle. He frowned. Had she broken them thrashing around? He'd have to check the restraint lengths. He gave a cursory glance at where the shackles sat on her thin limbs. No visible damage at least. However, she hadn't looked up at the sound of him opening the door. As if she didn't care that it was him that was visiting him, and not one of the other assistants. He couldn't have that. “I brought you dinner Lucy Gray. Aren't you hungry?” Silence. He put the tray of steaming vegetables and hot lamb stew carefully on the side table, then walked over to stand beside her legs. Carefully, like approaching a wounded animal, he extended his right arm towards her. His hand reached for her throat, fingers wrapping around lightly. He flexed his fingers; his thumb rested on her slight Adam's apple. She swallowed against his hand, but still she didn't look up. He slid his hand higher, thumb pressing against the underside of her chin. She looked up then. Lucy Gray Baird stared at him with her large brown eyes, and Coriolanus could see nothing behind them. She had retreated back into herself again. He would have to coax her back out. “Come on Lucy Gray.” He slid his fingers ever higher and cupped her face in his hand. His thumb ghosted over her lips, brushed gently against her cheek. She gave the slightest response and leaned into his palm. She still craved his touch. He smiled. “Will you eat for me? Aren't you thirsty?” She shook her head slowly no. She'd get sick like this. She was too thin. She had always been too thin, too fragile. Coriolanus had been trying to get her out of the laboratory for ages and move her to his home, but the politics of the place and his lower position hampered him at every turn. He took out a small bottle with a dropper out of his lab coat pocket, still gently holding her face. “How about a treat then? I found this in our kitchen. It's rose water.” He dropped a few drops onto her lips, and was pleased to see her open her mouth naturally. Her tiny pink tongue just barely slipped out against her lips. Emboldened, he squeezed a few more drops as he swiped at her lower lip with his other thumb. “Yeah there we go baby, isn't it good?” He gripped her chin and pushed his thumb further, into her mouth, his other hand never stopping the dropper. She closed her eyes. Maybe she was imagining bedtime again. That was fine by Coryo. Even pets deserved their good memories. “Suck, baby. Be a good girl now." And she was. Lucy Gray could be so good some days. He was hopeful that today was one of those days. She sucked his thumb, hallowed her mouth around it. Swirled her soft tongue against the pad and gave no resistance when he pushed in further. Just to test her. Just a little. She really was a lovely songbird. She was more agreeable afterwards, and he patiently fed her small spoonfuls of stew like a favoured pet. Coriolanus wanted nothing left to chance and had put sleep syrup in the stew as well, just in case she had decided to be especially unruly. But she had been a good girl — an especially docile pet today. Good girls got rewards. Despite what she might think, he loved giving her rewards, little treats for her good behaviour. He initially had her lay back, but her wings creaked and Lucy Gray let out a whimper. Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes but she refused to let them fall. His brave strong good girl. “I'm so sorry baby. Here, lie on your side on the edge of the bed. Good girls deserve rewards.” She slid obediently closer to the edge of the bed, letting the damaged wing hang awkwardly. Properly positioned, she looked lovely. A fallen angel, with no recourse but to stay on earth with him. Coriolanus got down beside her cot and knelt before her, a supplicant at her altar. He reached for her breast, felt the nipple through her thin dress. She gave a little gasp, and the tip hardened under his thumb. He slid his other hand up her thigh, under her slip. Her cunt was burning hot, a contrast to the cool skin of her legs. He slid two fingers inside her, and she clenched reflexively around them. Her small hands reached for his arm but didn’t try to push him away, She still had her eyes closed. “Does that feel good, baby?” The thumb that had been in her mouth now rubbed languidly against her clit. Lucy Gray nodded frantically. Small whimpers bubbled up her throat, but still she didn’t say a word. Before her transformation, he had had her shaved then lasered to keep the growth from returning. Coryo was adamant on upkeep as well and made sure to moisturise her on a regular basis — he was pleased with the results, as she always felt baby-soft under his hands. She was his prize pet, pampered and taken care of in every aspect. Lucy Gray Baird came apart underneath his hands with a shudder and a sigh. At the precipice, her eyes snapped open and she stared at him with a razor-sharp focus. Her mouth, open on an inhale, spoke a single word. *“Coriolanus.”*

How dare he come in here, treating her like she was on some temporary vacation, when she was a prisoner -- a test subject. Subhuman. He stood there in his perfectly pressed lab coat, clipboard in hand. Nimble fingers pulled a hankerchief out of his pocket and wiped carefully at the front of his coat, no longer pristine white. "Please believe me, Lucy Gray, this is the safest place for you right now." His beautiful blue eyes looked pleadingly at her. His voice held no malice, but Lucy Gray knew the key signature of his sweet tones. The calm beats of his tempo belied the real story. Unfortunately for Coriolanus, Lucy Gray had decided that she would never sing for him again.

attached to her and that voice, the words of a devil. Until one day, she woke, and there were no more wires, or tubes, or beeping. She was lying on her stomach on a clean white cot. Naked. Her back was still sore, and her shoulders felt heavier than anything. She felt imbalanced. Something white — a feather — brushed against her arm, and she started, then winced as she tried to get to a sitting position. She fell over in the cot and a full feathered wing suddenly struck out to her right. Horror spread across her face. No, no. He couldn’t have. “What did you do to me?” She tried to reach back, feel her shoulder blades, but her arm muscles screamed in protest. “I couldn’t live without my special songbird, Lucy Gray.”
