i normally don’t do pencil before inks but in some cases, i do , so what i end up looks human in the end or when i need lines or a pattern and i don’t see any wiggle room for that line going in the wrong direction

Larry Lieber was alone in his microscopic Manhattan apart- ment, as he is wont to be these days, when he got the news. He had finished his decades-­ long run as the artist for the Spider-­ Man news- paper strip in September 2018 and had nothing to do most of the time. He was dabbling in fiction—­ he’d typed out a short story based on his experiences with a woman he’d loved and had started a novel—­ as well as pondering a memoir. Occasionally, old pros from the comics industry would have lunch with him at the diner at the end of his block. Every once in a while, Marvel would invite him to New York screenings of their movies. He couldn’t understand the stories in the damn things, though—­ you had to see and remember all of them to track anything. He largely spent his time watching old movies on cable, reminiscing about his youth and the way things used to be. It was against this backdrop that he got a call from a reporter ask- ing him to comment on his brother’s death. It was the first Larry had known of the event—­ JC and her cohort had neglected to inform him. Two thoughts occurred to him. The first was one of relief for Stan: “He’d been spared his daughter, who could drive anybody, from what I gather, nuts,” Larry says. But the second thought was more troubling: “I think to myself, what am I . . .” He trails off. “I mean, everyone I know is going. Gone. And I thought, did I lose him? Can you lose somebody you never had? Did I ever have him?” He pauses. “I don’t know.” NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION Larry never got to bury his brother, but in a way, he already had, long before. He’s old. He has books to write. He doesn’t care about all the lawsuits and criminal investigations and everything else that has followed in the wake of Stan’s death. Let the crazies obsess over all that. He’s tired. It’s time to move on. After hours of conversation, the winter sun having long since abandoned the sky above New York, Larry attempts to sum up his feelings about his brother. “What’s the famous line from—­ you probably know of it—­ The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance?” he says to me, then recalls it: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”
