Yeah Carmen, remember when the festival you work for cracked down on its own invited guests and its staff for saying the very same thing and then you sent some pretty terrible and rude DMs to the people who joined a boycott against said festival? Very sad to learn of the passing of Marcel Ophuls, today, at ninety-seven; his achievement in the art of documentary is historic, both as moral reckoning and political activism: he created nonfiction forms for memory in a time and place of planned forgetting and enforced silence.

didn't get to post this in the heat of the moment – but here's Todd Haynes speaking about the influence of Douglas Sirk and R.W. Fassbinder at his Carrosse s'Or masterclass, definitely one of the highlights of this year's edition of the Quinzaine / Cannes at large (to me at least):

nothing really prematurely kills a film for me other than the seeing filmmakers calling their own work "haunting" in the synopsis. it's a litmus test: almost invariably, said films are overly pretentious and full of artifice.

UK SC's definition of 'woman' is a serious affront to decades of labour in queer studies to decouple sex & gender that even WHO recognises. It's a colonial-racial chokehold to safeguard power of TERFs & GCs. Moving forward, all women will have rights curtailed.

Got around to seeing the Tiger Award winner of the year, FIUME O MORTE! What a deeply fun and imaginative film – and probably the best performative reenactment doc I've seen in recent years (and is becoming an increasingly visible genre). Has all the playfulness of a Varda film (big words, I know!).
