Moss & the Emperor's first *real* meeting was, well...

A little too hectic to form a proper opinion during - not even thinking about attraction. But Moss had already inferred that their dream figure was illusory, and the truth did not surprise them, it relieved them.

You did always think that there was something... off about the golden paladin of your dreams. Something about them, perhaps in the way they moved, or in the timing of their expressions... it felt like an act, like the figure was a doll being puppeteered. Your suspicions were confirmed fairly quickly - your companions all spoke to you of their own dream guardians, and of how their form appeared differently for each of them. Still, illusion or not, you grew to trust them - there was always truth in their words, and in the way their protection never faltered. If they were wearing a disguise, it had to be for a good reason. Right? "Becoming a mind flayer might not be the worst thing." "Oh? Why do you say that?" the drow before you asks, struggling to maintain eye contact - "We met one named Omeluum, in the Underdark. It tried to help us, and..." You watch with mild amusement as your past self retells Omeluum's story to their guardian, of how it escaped from the colony it hailed from, of how it's searching for a source of nourishment that doesn't involve mortal brains. You were so excited to meet a friendly mind flayer, so hopeful that it could tell you more about your ailment. The experiment only yielded more questions than answers, yes, but knowing that there were good mind flayers out there... It gave you hope, that - maybe, even if you didn't find a cure, things might still turn out okay. Your guardian looks away before replying. "It's good to remain open-minded." There's a pause. They wanted to say more. But they didn't, and you didn't think to pry. A sigh forms beside you, beyond the memories. <Which of us is responsible for this dream?> You don't answer the Emperor's question, because... well, you don't know. It's impossible to tell this time. The memories splay out across a stage of astral clouds in a mock theater play, with no particular perspective overpowering the narrative.…

It takes a few years for them to get there. Moss was... concerned... when they went through ceremorphosis and found themself with leftovers & unfinished pieces, looking like a baby bird instead of a 'real' illithid.

Being able to literally see themself through their partner's eyes helped.
