One of my biggest fears about the midterms is that ICE could flood the polls with agents who perform Kavanaugh Stops on every non-white person before they get a chance to cast a ballot, then detain them until voting is over. Which is not far-fetched at this point. www.huffpost.com/entry/ice-po...
Thanks to a crucial Supreme Court decision on its shadow docket that authorized immigration officers to racially profile people they thought might be undocumented, Operation Metro Surge saw officers target anyone — citizen or not — who wasn’t white for questioning, detention or, in many cases, brutal treatment. ICE began going door-to-door in predominantly minority neighborhoods to ask where residents were born, sometimes dragging them out of their homes at gunpoint. Officers indiscriminately fired pepper spray and tear gas at residents, including into the car of a family, hospitalizing a baby. “What that did was have an incredibly chilling effect on how people move about our communities,” said Richard Carlbom, chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. “There are U.S. citizens who are Black, brown or Asian who won’t leave their house and we have to deliver food to them on a weekly basis because they’re afraid of being detained.”

I think the biggest news here may be that SCOTUS had evidently created software to perform conflict checks rather than leaving the task up to clerks and staff. We've seen a number of embarrassing oversights here—Alito just had to recuse at the last minute because he realized he had a conflict.

The Supreme Court of the United States has adopted a revised version of the Rules of the Court. Most of the changes are designed to support operation of newly developed software that will assist in identifying potential conflicts for the Justices, and the revisions impose a number of new requirements upon filers to support the software. When issuing the Code of Conduct for Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Justices directed Court Officers to evaluate whether such software might be useful for the Court. This software will be used to run automated recusal checks by comparing information about parties and attorneys in a case with lists created by each Justice’s chambers. The system was designed and created by the Court’s Office of Information Technology in cooperation with the Court’s Legal Office and Clerk’s Office. The software will serve in addition to existing conflict-checking procedures in chambers. The new Rules will take effect on March 16, 2026. The revisions include “Clerk's Comments.” These are not part of the Rules, but are furnished to assist readers in understanding the changes. In advance of the effective date of the new Rules, the Clerk’s Office will also issue updates to many of its guidance documents, which will provide further information about the electronic submission of information that will be used for the new software. The revisions and accompanying documents are available on the Court's website: 9. Where a respondent files a waiver of the right to file a brief in opposition, the waiver should identify any parties to the proceeding that were not identified in the petition under Rule 14.1(b)(i), along with their respective stock ticker symbols, if any. Where a respondent is a nongovernmental corporation and it has a parent corporation or a publicly held company owns 10% or more of the corporation’s stock, it is required that either a brief in opposition or a waiver be filed, and the brief in opposition or waiver must include the information required by Rule 29.6. Comment: These changes are designed to support the Court’s electronic conflict-checking system by requiring a respondent to correct any deficiencies in the Parties to the Proceeding section of the petition, and by including information about corporate parents.
