I have sort of a half-formed hypothesis rn that part of the reason the reaction to pokémon in the late 90s in the us was so *gestures* like that was because it was the first time since maybe like, beatlemania that american culture was faced with an imported phenomenon rather than a homegrown one

As a kid Dilbert was always a strip I saw pinned to cubicle walls when I visited my dad's office and that context, along with it being so drab and full of big words, made me assume that it was a Serious Grown Up Comic That Dealt With Complex Work Problems Children Wouldn't Understand

i was the only home whose cable didn’t go out when the sopranos finale aired and it showed tony looking up and seeing two guys walk into the restaurant holding hands. then it cut back to tony shrugging, which you have to understand in 2007 was a very powerful statement

One of the subtler problems with universes beyond is how like. When stories are written with the primarily to be stories, their characters tend to have multiple traits, often pulling from familiar groupings of tropes. Which leads to a disproportionate number + distribution of 3 color creatures
