Fluffvember Day 15: Trope of Choice (Hurt/Comfort)

Post-EW, Aymeric deals with Holle's nightmares as best he can. (This takes place immediately before "Heartsick.")

The telltale jerk of the xaela sleeping beside him pulled Aymeric from his own sleep. He was awake, and fully so, within the space of a moment, and sat up to assess Holle’s state. His tail, though trapped under the covers, lashed in agitation, and he whimpered as his body gave another jerk.

“Shh, shhh.” Aymeric brushed a hand over his furrowed brow and through his hair. “Holle, it’s alright.”

When the nightmares had first started, it hadn’t taken much more than that to quiet them, but over the past fortnight, instead of improving, they had steadily worsened, until he was harder and harder to bring out of them. A pained sound clawed its way out of Holle’s throat, and he writhed and kicked.

“No, no…” Please, not this again. Aymeric ran a hand down his body, rubbing at his arm, willing him to wake. It didn’t work.

No matter what Aymeric said or how, no matter what he did, Holle continued to twitch, and between whines there were panicked, murmured pleas: unintelligible, mostly, beyond the “no” repeated over and over with one familiar name. It wasn’t long before the whining became a keen, and the twitching became thrashing.

Guilt ate at him as Aymeric straddled his much smaller lover, moving to trap his body with his own, to pin him and contain his thrashing before he could reopen the wounds that had taken so long to heal. The wounds that had very nearly killed him. The Warrior fought his hold, because of course he did, twisting and straining, and Aymeric bent his head and closed his eyes. “Holle. Holle, please. I’m here. You're safe. Please.”

He hated this. He hated that he had no choice but to pin him like this, to make the nightmare worse by making him feel trapped, but it was this or watch him hurt himself. Holle writhed in his grasp, in what little room he had to do so, bucking and bending as he tried to free himself - and Aymeric knew full well that if he let him go now, he would be hit and kicked. Not that he could do much damage, as weak as he still was.

Aymeric held him there until the futility of his struggles exhausted and broke the fight in him, until the despair overtook him again and he arched and shuddered and wailed, and Fury, Aymeric couldn’t stand the sound, the heartbreak and the utter defeat of it, the way the fight went out of Holle with one final shudder and turned instead to sobs. He released him then, only to gather him into his arms as the sobs now wracked his fragile body.

Aymeric rocked him and held him close, tears rolling down his own cheeks as Holle cried himself out in his arms. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you, you’re alright. You’re safe.”

But the trouble was, at its core, this wasn’t about Holle’s safety. This wasn’t about the battle that had almost killed him. As Holle gasped breaths between the sobs he couldn’t stop - and Aymeric knew he was trying, knew how much he hated being seen like this - he tried to speak, desperate to explain himself, as though he needed to justify his state. To be forgiven for it. “I can’t- I can’t-”

“Shhh, shhhh.” Aymeric stroked his hair, trying to get him to settle. To breathe, instead of wasting his energy and breath on unnecessary apologies and explanations. “It’s okay. I know.”

“I can’t- I can’t save them,” he despaired, in spite of Aymeric’s assurances. “They won’t- They won’t let me. He won’t…he won’t listen. Why won’t he ever listen?”

There was no logic that could cure nightmares. Aymeric knew that well; he’d fought his own, and even now, when the cause was so far behind him, there were nights when they came back all the same. No amount of reminding Holle that his friends were safe and whole and well could erase the fresh memories of them sacrificing themselves before his eyes, one after the other after the other. Even Haurchefant. Even though Holle had begged.
