New guitar day! An Emerald Amicus 12 string, in all black carbon Fiber. Black Opus. This little guy really sings. Can’t wait to try it out with the band.

In front, a black guitar on a wooden floor. It is an Emerald Amicus Black Opus, from Donegal Ireland. It has 12 strings, a very short scale, and is incredibly loud! Plays great straight out of the case. No setup required! Behind it is my 2006 Martin D12-28, for reference. It is about 4 frets worth of longer scale. Also a beauty, but very head heavy! I replaced the metal tuner buttons with pearl and took off the washers, which saved (no joke) about a pound of weight. The Emerald Amicus on the stand against the Martin D12-28. Pretty accurately shows the scale difference. The headstock of the Amicus. All black carbon fiber with black tuners. Heavy for its size, but very well balanced.

A 5 gallon brew pot in a snow drift. The wort has boiled, and I am at the point of “cooling as quickly as possible”. I’ve decided that instead of hooking up the hose and wort chiller, I’d put it out in our 6 inches of snow and ice and 20 feels like 12 degree temps. Vanilla Porter coming soon.

Our stage set. “Stage”! Our virtual tip jar got us a cool $10 to split- but cash is king! The FIRE bucket is amazingly effective as a tip jar. On the left is my set up, with music stand in the fore, my pedalboard below, and the OM28 behind. On the right is Kevin’s D28. The background is our new band backdrop, with the brewery logo aglow behind. My Martin OM28. This is such an awesome guitar. So many voices, and takes everything I throw at it. I updated it this week, since Stew-Mac was having a sale: Gold Grover tuners, gold strap button and gold end pin jack for about $100. The metal parts kinda mismatched before with chrome tuners, steel strap button and bronze end pin. I joke that it makes the sound “richer”…. The pedalboard. In order shown (not the signal path) bottom row l to r: Mythos Mjolnir (for the boost but it’s a beast), Boss Dimension C (secret weapon), Mythos Fates Chorus (that 12 string sound), Kelley splitter and a Fishman wireless receiver. Top row: Sonicake Factory acoustic preamp, a rarely used Boss delay, and a Stark tuner. The tuner is on the B circuit off the splitter, so I can mute and tune.

In 2012, I traveled to Malone NY where it was -30 degrees. In a warm guitar workshop I learned the art of pearl inlay and the basics of guitar building. Dave Nichols was a wonderful teacher and an incredible craftsman. #guitar #pearlinlay
An acoustic guitar. The shape is a Martin OOO/OM style. It is an Appalachian Spruce top with mahogany back and sides. The inlay on the headstock and 19th fret are clovers designed, cut and inlaid by me with Dave’s supervision. The dots are also hand cut- super tedious! The pick guard came later - it is one of Mario Proulx’s pickquard, and is a stunner. This is a fun small bodied guitar. Great for couch sitting and quiet strumming. I regret not getting another opportunity to visit Malone. It was such a warm and welcoming workshop. I do still do inlay work, and quite a bit of luthiery. Not quite ready to build another acoustic, but getting there…

Christmas morning brew. Gulden Drak Calvados, 10.5%. Aged in apple brandy barrels. I expect to be shitfaced by the time the turkey is done.

Visited Stockton in 2018. Goosebumps all day long. Hard to explain to the younguns that these locations made up the soundtrack of my youth. Alas, no Arlo or Officer Obie sightings…
The youngest in front of the original Alice’s Restaurant. It’s around the back, just a half a mile from the railroad tracks. In front of the Guthrie Center with the younguns. Alice’s home, and where the Thanksgiving festivities in the song happened. The trash was hauled from here. Excellent music venue now, great sound and great people. Theresa’s Cafe is in the space that was Alice’s Restaurant. I’ve been through the area 3 times since, I have never seen it open… Stencil on the door, 2018. Arlo Guthrie Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary. What a time.

A dark beer in a fat tulip shape glass. The glass is from a defunct brewery where I used to work, Brew Republic Bierwerks. The beer is an Imperial Stout, very dark and chocolatey, with a tight creamy tan color head. It is on a drink coaster that says “I drink to make people more interesting”. There is a red Snark tuner next to it. Behind is my Martin D28 from 2005. It is my daily driver and has seen some use. I found it in Japan and I feel I rescued it, as the neck needed a reset and a fret level. It was nearly unplayable.

A pleasant surprise! I don’t often go to the big box store (where shopping is a baffling experience), but saw this and grabbed 2. Super nice price for a bomber of 8.5ish% beer. This is actually brewed by Deschutes. Boozy and chocolatey and I’m going to get more. #bskybeer

I think it was $8 a bottle? Outrageous, and how can you say no? But it was an excellent gamble. I’ll need to go get more to *try* to cellar. Very tasty indeed. Brewed and bottled by Deschutes, and they were not shy about the branding considering it’s from Costco and labeled as Kirkland.

Brew Day. Hazy IPA coming soon.
4 silver packets arranged around a white/black/gold packet. The silver packets are all 2 ounces of different hops- Amarillo, Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic. The smaller packet is Verdant IPA dry ale yeast. I need to order dry yeast during the summer as anything else tends to die in transit with the heat. I’ll use wet yeast on winter brew days.

Oops I bought a guitar.
A Martin X Series OM guitar. It has a dark brown streak top. The ring is herringbone. This guitar survived a house fire and still has drywall and dust on it and in it. It plays great, as it was given a decent repair after the fire. Needs some cleaning and some fine tuning. It is pictured on the deck of my in-laws house, a light gray floor and dark wood railing. In the background is Lake Ontario. Backside of the OM guitar. It is dark streak, I believe an ebony? The neck is a ply of several layers. They are usually rough, but this one seems well played in.
