Important contribution from my Te Herenga Waka-VUW and Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha-UC colleagues on the history, achievements, and limits of the 🇳🇿 Citizenship (Western Samoa) (Restoration) Amendment Act 2024. 👏
Nikitha Aithal, Helena Cook, Marnie Lloydd and Julija Sardelić focus on 🇳🇿 2024 citizenship restoration for Sāmoans, arguing it treats the symptoms, not the systems of colonial injustice

Justice means dismantling ongoing racism & exclusion, not just restoring legal status ⚖️

I really wish someone in the opposition would move this motion in the House tomorrow (as per, eg, the C19 PHR Act). The motion would almost certainly fail but we need to build a stronger expectation that such scrutiny shouldn’t get dispensed with in the law-making process.
- immediately refer amended Act to select committee for post-enactment review.

Had an OIA on the Marsden decisions land. This appears to be the ground zero and the level of thinking Collins put into gutting humanities funding. I have found no actual *advice* or analysis on the removal of humanities panels and literally zero engagement with Royal Society or Universities.

New paper out in @polstudies.bsky.social with @samcrawley.bsky.social on diversity & candidate selection patterns in NZ elections, 1996-2020. We examine ethnicity, representation outcomes, and how parties navigate electoral system incentives. May be of interest to @migcitizenapsa.bsky.social folks!

You do not need an EasyVote Card to vote.

You do not even need to be enrolled and you do not need to take identification with you when you go to vote.

If you are a NZer over the age of 18, just show up to a polling booth and you will be able to vote.

Pass it on.
