it's funny how in the You've Got Mail era Barnes and Noble was the bad guy and now i'm like "i love patronizing local, in-person, actually-book-focused business Barnes and Noble instead of buying books on Amazon"

Nothing like submitting your proposal the day the Federal Government shuts down!
NSF proposal turned in to my Sponsored Projects Office for check, routing and (ultimately, hopefully) timely submission to NSF. Submitting proposals is hard under the best of circumstances... while also trying to 'Dean' it's God-awful. Reviewers, be kind, I tried my best to make it easy to read ;)

Every university has a story. UC Merced’s began with sketches and a dream to expand access to higher education. Now, 20 years later, UC Merced Arts presents "20 Years of UC Merced Art & Architecture", on view at La Galería through Dec. 13. 🔗 ucm.edu/olasz1

I know that rankings don’t really mean much… but, I’m going to take a minute just to reflect on just all the good good stuff that had to happen over the last 20 years to get @ucmerced.bsky.social to this news… we’re ranked in the top 25 Schools in the country!

As a general principle, self-serving, pompous and self-righteous preaching isn’t likely to win folks to your side.

“Self nominations welcome” feels like the award version of “preliminary data not needed” for grants

Things are hard right now - very hard. So I want to throw some positivity out there. This morning (great planning I know) I decided that I wanted to talk about resumes/CVs at group meeting this afternoon, but realized I needed examples from industry. In short order @bagphos.bsky.social (Pfizer),

Saw this at the other place… here’s what worries me, “imagine how much money…” why would you need to imagine, it’s literally in the post you shared! 260,000 x $8 x days of operation… even scarier though? All the people writing nonsensically incorrect answers below the post!

There is nothing that makes me more annoyed than private foundation grants that only allow faculty from a select list of “elite” universities to apply. It significantly limits my ability to obtain non-governmental funding. 🧪

out of left field question of the day... I just got back from France, my (French) Duolingo streak stands at 250 days, do I bother continuing? I am (potentially) going to Spain in 2 years, do I switch to Spanish now in the hopes I could be conversational in 2 years?

I’m going to suffer the slings and arrows for this one… but AI is a boondoggle and will never fulfill the current hype - and NSF throwing money at it with a $100m investment is a waste.
