We are grateful to The Company of Biologists for publishing our article on behaviours reminiscent of orientation flights in Heliconiini butterflies in Journal of Experimental Biology. Another is this hovering flight where they dance back and forth around before landing, again they do this repeatedly in a feeding bout… they also do it to artificial flowers that lack floral odours… 5/n

One pronounced behaviour are circular flights around a floral resource, where they turn back on themselves in a loop. They do this repeatedly while feeding; loop, feed, repeat… 4/n

Insectember day 4: Heliconius clysonymus
Common name: Montane longwing

Bug with hat, my go-to apparently

An illustration of an anthropomorphized montane longwing butterfly skipping through the air whimsically. It's mostly black with a stripe of sulphur white on the side of its thorax, top wing, and around its eyes. There are also some fades of red on its bottom wing and wing joints. Its top wing is almost twice as long as its bottom wing, its limbs are lanky, its abdomen thin and its thorax fluffy. It touches the brim of the woven hat on its head, maybe tipping it politely to whoever its passing.
