i had such a long day but there’s been so many lovely fics updated that I get to curl up and read and theres finally as much snowfall as I used to get as a kid and its SO LOVELY AND FUN
Asphalt walking path that is clear of snow, 2-3 feet of snow is piled on either side of the path. Big fluffy snow is falling, area is lit by street lamps. Two cars deep in the snow so only the top of the back bumper is showing. Street at night with various bare trees and buildings around. Street is somewhat plowed, sidewalk is also somewhat plowed, large snowdrifts ate between the street and sidewalk and on either side. Orange diamond yield sign is in the center of the photo.

His hands scrunch up over his eyes and up into his hair, his knuckles white with tension. He’s shaking, the guilt, the pain, the exhaustion from the last couple days hits all at once and Atsumu can see it physically pulse throughout his small, pale body. Anger swells in Atsumu’s heart. It’s not fair. It’s not fucking fair. Kiyoomi’s the best pilot those old fucker have and they know it. They want to carve him down to size, the small boy they’ve forced through their program for what’s practically been his whole life, who knows the mech he pilots better than he knows his own family. They want him docile, to think he’s not enough and to always aim to please, to bow down and lick the dirt off their feet. They’ve put weight after weight on his back, let him get used to the pressure, to think he can just keep going until they kick out the legs from underneath him and blame him for the fall. It’s not fucking fair. He feels his body enter what the lady has called ‘stasis’, and he knows immediately he’s in for a bad time. It’s a cool creep that spreads up from his feet, like slowly submerging yourself in a tub of icewater. After the cold front passes though, his body feels almost normal, but also like it’s not even there at all. Atsumu tries to move his toes, just give them a little wiggle, but nothing happens. He grimaces, while he still can. It’s unnerving, and a bit horrifying, to suddenly lose control of the limbs he can still feel, still see. The cold creeps up further, up his chest and as it wraps around his neck he concentrates to cool the swell of panic that rises up. Thoughts swirl around his head as he tries to grasp a thread that will keep him calm, keep him centered. Remnants of the mission pops up, and Kiyoomi’s admonishing glare after they had unsuited jumps to the forefront of his mind. But now, with the cooling of his own anger, Atsumu pictures more to the glare. A sadness, a surrender that dissolves into the depths of his dark eyes. Kiyoomi’s been through this before, who knows how many times, for years. He knows better than anyone what it takes to reconnect severed nerves, and if this is just the build-up, Atsumu can’t imagine what’s going to happen when they actually start the process. For a minute, he feels a wave of fondness fill his heart towards his too-strict commander, a boy who simply wanted to shield his allies from whatever waits ahead. But any thoughts disappear as the first sting of the reconnection ricochets through his body.

The highway was mostly empty. Osamu only saw one other car. "Why don't most people have cars here?" "Fuck if I know." "Are these cars people used t' off themselves with? Is that how they got here?" "Man, how does anything get here in the first place?" Kenji squinted behind the wheel. No sun, but bright-white, same as always. Osamu propped his arm on the window and rested his head. "We'll have to stop somewhere before it gets dark." "Why?" "'Cause the headlights don't work." "Then let's find a mechanic and get them fixed. Can't believe yer tellin' me this now. How long have ya been drivin' around without headlights? That's dangerous." Kenji leveled a look at him. "Dangerous?" He echoed. "Let's just get it fixed." "No, no, no. It's not that easy." "What's the big deal? It's just the headlights." "Listen, this car, is fucking cursed. I tried to get it fixed. It can't be fixed, okay? It's impossible." "Whaddaya mean it's cursed? Yer so weird, man. Let's stop somewhere before it gets dark and get it fixed. I'll pay fer it, don't worry." Kenji sighed, "If you insist… But I'll bet you a beer that it can't be fixed." Osamu sniffed. He reached out and took the box of cassette tapes on the dashboard. "Ya got some music? What's this?" He flipped through the tapes, all of them custom, a messy faded scrawl he could barely make out on their labels. "These work, right?" Kenji opened his mouth and drove right into a pothole, making Osamu lose his grip on the box. It clattered down between his legs, the tapes lading around his feet. "Ah, shit!" Kenji cursed, looking down like he could see the tapes, "Anything that goes underneath that seat, forget about it!" "What? Why? Is there a hole or somethin'?" Kenji nodded sagely, "Yeah… No… It's a—kind of…More like, uh, a black hole?" Osamu stopped trying to gather the tapes. He stared at Kenji from where he was bent down, his jaw slack. "There's a black hole under yer passenger seat?" "Or a-a-a Bermuda Triangle? You know?" Kenji's eyes didn't leave the road, "Things just—they just disappear there sometimes." Osamu watched him shake his head and then nod to himself. He reached down and picked the only tape that had gotten caught between his sneakers. The rest were gone. He tilted it to show Kenji the label, who cocked his head with a scowl. "Oh, that one, that's not very good." Osamu turned the tape in his hands, "It's the only one we got. What is it?" "It's my old band."
