Taiwan relies on imports for about 96% of its energy (2023).
This map highlights the main suppliers of fossil fuels used for power generation:
Australia: 50% of coal, 40% of gas
Qatar: 28% of gas
United States: 27% of gas, 9% of oil
Saudi Arabia: 31% of crude oil
Indonesia: 25% of coal

"A grid-aware website responds to the cleanliness or dirtiness of a user’s electricity grid, i.e. whether it's currently using more renewable energy or fossil fuels."

For more on this, also check out issue 9 of Branch magazine (by the Green Web Foundation): branch.climateaction.tech/issues/issue...
This is not CSS grid-aware, but energy grid-aware websites. Websites that respond to the “cleanliness” of the user’s local electricity grid. A very interesting read and concept.

If you're a frontend developer like me and find yourself regularly wondering about the intersection of data transfer, network energy consumption, and web sustainability, then boy do I have a blog post with a really long title just for you!

Thinking about network sustainability for frontend developers - Fershad Irani
Sure data transfer does not equal network energy use. Yes, but there is still a way for frontend developers to influence network energy consumption by reducing data transfer.

Great point on strategic sneakiness of scale.

The bigger the phenomenon, the smaller the impact any *individual* act seemingly has.

A perfect way to devolve responsibility to individual scales & dismiss individual acts as insignificant.

It’s scale *creators* who have real power & responsibility.
Google's claim that each AI prompt uses the energy of 9 seconds of television is like throwing dispersant over an oil slick.

The only way to get a number that low is with massive scale, which you should definitely worry about. medium.com/@dnafus/why-...

TLDR: the smaller the number, the more you should be worried

Taiwan’s energy imports 2003–2023:
-Coal stable (shift from China → Australia)
-Oil steady (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, US rising)
-LNG almost 4× growth (Australia, Qatar)
96% import dependence.
Energy demand still rising.
Upcoming referendum on nuclear power makes energy safety & independence key issues.

Correct, global hypocrisy on display. Taiwan has all the characteristics of a statehood without any of Palestine’s baggage, yet the global community can turn a blind eye to deny Taiwan’s existence.
