Catching an Uber, #Bridgerton style? This remarkable 1783 pocket #map of #London, in the collection of @ihrlibrary.bsky.social, shows the Hackney Coach fare between key destinations in the city. A great guide to getting around - and avoiding getting ripped off! More info in AltText.

Why is the Grauniad still obsessed with Mandelson? Still trying to hump the corpse of the Blair years? Or just in thrall to any faction on the right of the Labour party?

Too cynical?

Not to be all ‘the problem with the modern world is that it isn’t like it was when I was young’ but I do think things were better when edgy white boys were into skateboarding, weed and starting crappy punk bands rather than the gym, fascism and starting podcasts.

Watched Land and Freedom with the boy this evening. I have sobbed myself into a dessicated husk and he is ready to centralise the means of production and overthrow capitalism.

So that's a win all round ...

Roman archaeologist here. These arches were emperors’ propaganda in the Empire, and they’re Orange Julius Caesar’s propaganda now.
New at @washingtonpost.com:

Trump wants to build a *250-ft-tall arch*, for America’s 250th anniversary

The structure would tower over nearby memorials — changing DC’s skyline and blocking views of the Lincoln Memorial

It’s also spooking experts who say it’s just too big

1/10. Tory peer Daniel Hannan has posted a potted history of slavery that demonstrates how historical understanding is being twisted by politicians. I’ll examine it in light of historians’ research.

83 people were executed for riots relating to the Corn Laws in 1816, including 5 people from Littleport, just outside Ely. 19 people were transported or imprisoned for their part in the Littleport Riot.

The local Morris side are called the Ely and Littleport Riot.

It's hard to grasp how large this grouper is until you see it in comparison to the ship's toilet on the left.

This appears to be an Atlantic goliath grouper or 'itajara' (Epinephelus itajara). They can reach 800 lbs (350 kg) & 8 feet long (2.5 m)

Let's talk about these gentle giants.

When the Met police raided Westminster Meeting House, the Quakers there were powerless to do anything, so they hit the coppers hard, where it hurts...

They made tea and didn't offer the coppers any.

Make Green Candidate Hannah Spencer the new MP for Gorton & Denton.

Not owned by GB News, a free working woman, not a landlord, not a millionaire, just someone free to vote for whatever she wants.

There are no other candidates, just puppets.

Medicine is a scientized process but it's generally not scientific—its roots go back to a bunch of ad-hoc heuristics and superstitious beliefs, and attempts to fix that via evidence based medicine don't necessarily work (TLDR: human biology is unreasonably complicated).
