NEW JOB in #ornithology and #conservation to track #seabirds from Rathlin Island and analyse data to identify foraging areas (deadline 10 Nov): buff.ly/K0zcdH8
Have you ever wondered about the disparities in #seabirds species at conferences? Are we talking about all the species?
Wonder no more. We (@thelabandfield.bsky.social @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social @ingridpollet.bsky.social) have the answer!

Why does a pigeon-sized bird purposely throw itself into hurricane-force winds?

With the help of lightweight GPS trackers, WHOI biologist Francesco Ventura has unlocked the Desertas petrel’s secret to success: cyclones!

Tracking data and teamwork once again show their value for wildlife conservation.

Our study led by Timothée Poupartand and Thibaut Bettignies reveals mismatches between the Natura2000 marine network and seabird distributions, urging for better protected areas off France

A new study (link.springer.com/article/10.1...) compares the diets of Scopoli’s and Yelkouan shearwaters.

Despite a wide diet, a few pelagic fish species stood out.

Protection of spawning areas and selective fishing are needed for shearwaters and fisheries to co-exist in the region.

Because of the massive increase in #IngestedPlastic this year (number, mass and size of particles) were finding intact items inside our baby #seabirds. This means we’re able to get information on brands…including THIS! ⬇️ #SoyFish #PollutionIsADesignChoice #shearwaters

One of the world's best known, most loved and most outstanding seabird biologists

#ornithology
Most worryingly, we found evidence of neurodegeneration in <90-day-old seabird chicks with high levels of ingested plastic - protein expression signatures akin to what we see in human patients with dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (3/5)

Hi, very interested in joining! Is there still place?

Hi! Is there still place? Working on marine systems!
!PhD opportunity! We are recruiting a student to use biotelemetry and modelling to understand bycatch in Europe's most endangered seabird, the Balearic shearwater. If you are interested come to our online Q&A session on 12th Dec. See advert below!

At the 2024 Movecolab.it meeting @ecotos.bsky.social presented his PhD project on #plastic ingestion in Mediterranean shearwaters.

Plastic has been found in 16 out of the 18 Scopoli's shearwaters (dead for bycatch) checked last week.
Great collaboration with Susanne Kuehn and Jan van Franeker

Not new but still an amazing one!👏

As I just joined Bluesky, let me introduce myself! I’m an #ecologist currently based in #Italy, deeply fascinated by how #seabirds manage to thrive in the challenging marine environment.
I have a passion for working in tropical ecosystems and yes, I have a soft spot for #storm #petrels!
