When BC held a Citizens’ Assembly, its proposal earned more support than most governments ever do. It only failed because politicians set the bar arbitrarily high.

Now a new Assembly has been recommended. Time to give people a fair path to real proportional representation.

The fate of the BC Liberals is a reminder that blocking reform does not protect parties. First past the post eventually turns on everyone.

A new Citizens Assembly offers a fair way to rebuild the rules so voters and parties alike get real representation.

I care about voting reform so much!! I'm so hopeful that this time BC can make it stick (and as I understand it, Citizen's Assembly is a great path forward)!

I also want this to happen as a signal to the federal government...

Never give up, never give in. We need to change our voting system to PR. Period. The Electoral Reform Committee recommends a Citizens Assembly. Assembly will recommend which PR system to use with, hopefully, NO REFERENDUM!! Just implement!!

Recommendations from an all-party B.C. committee on democratic reform has reignited a longstanding conversation in the province about the possibility of proportional representation.

But #health, #housing, and #environment are just niche issues, right? ;-)

Whatever your top issue is, countries using #ProportionalRepresentation perform better.

Let's hope the BC NDP follow through on both the recommendations for a Citizens' Assembly as well as enabling municipalities to upgrade their voting system. People don't realize how our electoral system is hindering us in every sector.

Voting systems matter, they have consequences, whether it's a seat count that wins a false majority or a proportional vote count, where # of votes = # of seats. Being able to vote also matters. Election Canada must fix this issue.

That's our FVC Victoria Chapter rallying the BC NDP. We need to see them follow through with setting up what the public consultation asked for, a citizens assembly, then implement what they come up with. Premier David Eby, the ball's in your court, 93% supports Pro Rep. Lets get it done!!
BC ran a public consultation this year and invited submissions on electoral reform. The result was overwhelming. Ninety three percent supported proportional representation.

Our volunteers outside the BC NDP convention on Saturday heard the same. People want a better democracy.

The evidence is clear. Countries with proportional representation have lower polarization, more stability, and more real choice. Cooperation becomes normal instead of rare. 9/10

This is one of the issues that polarizes people: corruption made easy by first past the post. People get fed up BUT what can they do but watch it happen. That's when things can get radical. More polarization occurs. This isn't going away, we need the fix. Demand...Proportional representation!!
When a party wins total control with far less than half the vote, it becomes far too easy to target political opponents. That is the corruption built into first-past-the-post.

Proportional representation brings real limits and real accountability.

This is what concentrated power produces. A party wins a majority with forty percent of the vote and suddenly has the freedom to target its opponents.

Proportional representation makes prevents this kind of behaviour by requiring broad, shared control of government.

He's right. The country needs fundamental democratic reform: starting with giving everyone a vote that truly counts.

When governments flip direction every cycle, long term projects stall and public trust sinks.

This is what first-past-the-post produces by design.

Proportional representation creates stable majorities that support consistent long term policy.

Shame on Doug Ford, Danielle Smith, François Legault and Scott Moe. This could be avoided with proportional representation where every vote counts and would stop these wannabe autocrats from trampling people's rights. None of them obtained majority votes, just majority seats with FPTP. @fairvote.ca

When leadership contenders acknowledge the core issue, the national debate shifts.

Keep everyone polarized with unchecked power, and slip into the inside pocket, thanks!
Safe seats, swing riding pressure, and unchecked power are built into first-past-the-post.

Those conditions make quiet influence and strategic favours far more valuable.

Proportional representation breaks that pattern by making every vote count.

Yes, first past the post creates radical polarization. The studies are out, and the verdict recommends proportional representation!
Western alienation is not inevitable.

It is what you get when millions of votes in the West elect almost no one and voters are told their communities do not count unless they back the winning side.

Proportional representation would take the heat out of the divide.
