Quite a large temperature anomaly contrast between the poles in January, with colder anomalies in the Antarctic and significantly warmer anomalies in the Arctic.

Plot shows zonal-mean temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). GISTEMPv4 using their 1951-1980 baseline.

Last month observed temperatures more than 5°C above the 1981-2010 average across Greenland and the eastern Canadian Arctic. This was associated with a negative N(AO) large-scale circulation pattern, which contributed to ridging over the region.
