Thank you to all the amazing, bright and hardworking participants of #SciCommUU25!!

You guys were brilliant, it was a pleasure to organize and deliver these three days to you.

Can’t wait to see all the ways you’ll make this world better with your science and your communication! ☀️

Final day of #SciCommUU25 comes in hot with Adeline Marcos from FECYT, bringing us the world of science journalism. How do science becomes news?

The students had their own take on it covering the project EcoSentinel, which looks into enhancing plants to become nature’s guardians 🌿🌱

Starting the 10th year sharing our love for #scicomm & #outreach at Uppsala University with our graduate course. 3 days full on ways to talk about science, how to reach different audiences, & how make research have the impact it needs in our societies.

Here @hugogdtc.bsky.social kicking it off!

I did it! Gave my first-ever #PintofScience talk at a pub in Stockholm! 🍺

Less data, more punchlines (well, attempted 😅).
Feeling like a beginner again!

The crowd was sharp, curious, and full of great questions.
Grateful to have shared the night with brilliant speakers and an even better audience!

On the way and ready to join Stockholm’s @pintsworld.bsky.social festival to talk about #AntibioticResistance!

This time I feel like a beginner again by doing a new kind of talk… maybe with one or two jokes in there?? We will see… EXCITING!!!

So well said! Both encouraging because of the opportunities but so discouraging to see we are just not doing enough.

What if instead of vilifying over-the-counter #antibioticprescription we taught and educated those potential sellers? @marcmendelson.bsky.social holds the difficult position of arguing against #newantibiotics, but greatly highlights all other aspects that require our attention

Day 4 and still touching on new topics! Now #probiotics on the scene. Lena Biehl brings evidence of their use for different indications. What’s promising:
- use during (not before, not after!) #ab treatment to prevent diarrhea
- vaginal use for #UTI, #candidiasis & #vaginosis

515.000 deaths, 2.5billion antibiotic doses, and A LOT of money can be saved by vaccination. Mateusz Hasso from @who.int makes a case for widespread immunization to reduce #AMR burden.

Here’s the report: www.who.int/publications...

Vaccines are undoubtedly a way to manage #AMR, directly and indirectly! Adam Cunningham talks benefits and challenges.
Vaccination to both #bacteria & #viruses reduces infection, disease burden & #antibiotic use!

Fusariosis can be as scary as it sounds. Fungal infections might not be as common as bacterial, but when they do happen their #resistance patterns can look like this! 😱 Thanks to @olivercornely.bsky.social for bringing us the new #antifungals coming to the rescue!

4th day starts with the #antibiotic pipeline. New drugs for our bugs! Martin Emting develops synthetic antivirulence molecules, aka pathoblockers 🙅🏻‍♀️ These drugs can stop bacteria from infecting by targeting systems like quorum sensing (bacterial communication!).

Tender schnitzels, warm apple strudels, the fluffiest whipped cream you’ll ever find, sausages that keep on giving, or famous fancy cakes…

Each #ESCMIDGlobal is an opportunity to explore a new cuisine, and #Viennese food does not disappoint!

Anything else you might recommend? 2 days left! Ñam 🤤

How to leverage #free-text data in GP health records? Gjis Danoe presents the BERT&EARNIE #AI driven #surveillance approach.
Model can pick up signals of early outbreaks!

Great potential for well organized #healthcare settings, where records are routinely gather!

Couldn’t agree more with @teachepi.bsky.social!

Communication is vital, essential, NEEDED for progress! #comms skills should be as important as any other lab skill for scientists, but specially for those working in topics that relate directly with the public

How can we break the **really bad** #sciencenews cycle that ends undermining the power and value of scientific progress? We scientists can help on #scicomm part of it, but little power over click-bait journalism & internet spread. @phdcomics.bsky.social

Listening to the great @marionkoopmans.bsky.social at a #ESCMIDGlobal session on #anti-science and trust in science.

The public seems to agree with scientists needing to communicate to general audiences, but not so clear when asked if they should advocate or influence #policy.

Why would this be?

Emre Iseri from Utilizer present their method, based on a chromogenic agar on a dipstick, marrying the traditional culture method with the urine analysis tests. Easy, simple and quick to give results.

Patrice Nordmann brings us their cheap, easy & rapid test to detect #betalactamase activity in urine samples from #UTI patients. The test is based on Nitrocefin, which changes color if hydrolized when the enzymes are present. The hope is to bring it directly to the doctors office

In the wake of deploying new agents like new #metalobetalactamaseinhibitors, new tests look to find their usability from the get go, as resistance to these compounds can be already out there. Octavio Raro presents the NitroSpeed Taniborbactam platform based on hydrolization

Christian Moguet brings their lateral flow test to detect DHA AmpC #betalactamase in enterobacterales. Current work shows that the test has high sensitivity and can differentiate between low and high expression of the enzyme, which correlates with resistance phenotype

Starting the third day with #rapidAST. What’s new trying to get faster AND better? Julia Rogers presents a new lateral flow test that can detect the presence of an important betalactamase: KP2 #carbapenemase

Test like this would be incredibly helpful in low-resource settings!
