#FlowersOnFriday: The Rosy Hyacinth Orchid is a leafless native that steals its food from the roots of a eucalypt via a fungal pathway.

Look for them sprouting from the base of gum trees in summer!

Stay tuned for more stories of #OurEucalyptHome in the lead up to #NationalEucalyptDay2026 on 23/03.

#FlowersOnFriday: Pollination strategies!
Insect-attracting gums:
- white/cream flowers = more visible to insects.
- small, shallow flowers = accessible nectar
- tend to have denser populations, where pollinators with small home ranges can carry pollen from tree to tree

Koalas survive almost exclusively on tough, dry, toxic Eucalyptus leaves.

How?
🐨 slow metabolic rate
🐨 low energy consumption
🐨 can sniff out least toxic leaves
🐨 sophisticated detox and nutrient recovery system

We did patrols around Harcourt the day after the fire came through & hosed down old trees along the roadsides that were still burning. Terrible to see the loss. And that was before they did 'clean up' for safety. The cumulative loss of old trees is hard to bear.

A magnificent River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), photographed in Harcourt by Alan Deumer. Sadly, it burned to the ground in recent fires. For centuries it sheltered wildlife and watched over the community. Farewell, stately giant.

A week on from the heatwave and catastrophic fires here in Central Victoria.

We're taking a moment to enjoy the cool breeze amongst the scented blossoms of a Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora). It's such an intensely different day from this time last week.

We’re thinking of the communities, wildlife, and places affected by the recent bushfires. We recognise and share in the deep grief many feel for the loss of homes, businesses, stock and pets, and the beloved trees and bushland people love. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted. ❤️

Two stunning, haunting scenes this #ThickTrunkTuesday by Joy Kachina Photography.
Joy captures the dying Miena Cider Gums of Tasmania—majestic even in decay. Endemic, endangered, and vanishing fast due to climate change.
