I was part of a small book club of K-5 folks. This book is a MUST read for every math educator, coach and administrator.
Considering reading @mathematize4all.bsky.social's new book on Rethinking Disability in Mathematics? Read what one group of high school teachers are taking away from it!

I saw this on a fifth grader’s page:

A diagram of a circle labeled “2 sides.”

I asked him to explain.

“Well there’s an INside and an OUTside.”

What’s important in looking for a tutor for an elementary student with dyscalculia? There aren’t dyscalculia tutors like there are dyslexia trained tutors. @mathematize4all.bsky.social @martamath0901.bsky.social

One of the things I try to stress to educators when discussing UDL is that it will make the job of a teacher easier in the end. It is work to set up systems that allow for flexibility for all, but then the students are in the driving seat. Good for students, good for teachers

A challenge of teaching:
Sometimes,

with the of best intentions

I oversimplify learning

to the point where I rob the children,

of experience

in untangling it for themselves.

Another thought. I think of Eleanor Duckworth's book The Having of Wonderful Ideas. Children often have wonderful ideas that may not be new to the universe but are new to them, and how they express themselves is uniquely theirs.
OK, enough advice.

They say that our work should be "research informed," and yet they ignore the most robust research findings, like the importance of belonging for academic success and the importance of teacher communities for sustaining teachers in the profession.

Enough. Stop gaslighting educators.

When we make math this insurmountable mythical thing, folks who "get it" can tie being good at math to being better than other people. Therefore some lash out in anger at the idea that anyone can be good at math because it threatens their identity and self-worth. #NCTMCHI24

We need to pay attention.
#ITeachMath #MTBOS what an amazing example of the political nature of math. Banning Venn diagrams!
So no joke: the dictatorship in 1970s Argentina once banned Venn diagrams. Because they could be seen as finding common ground between two (apparently) different groups, and if you’re a dictator, unity is a threat. There’s an artist whose work revolves around this!
