Europe is mortal for the same reason it is successful – because ‘Europe’ is an attractive organisation. The challenge now is to match that attractiveness with strong enough institutions and partners to ensure Europe is resilient.
Europe: Mortal, Yet Resilient
If Europe really is mortal, Europeans need to understand why.

The challenge now is to recognize the steps being taken that will transform the internal market -- and other parts of the EU -- even more fundamentally. It is also to explain why there is no alternative. 2/2 encompass-europe.com/comment/euro...
Europe: mortal, yet resilient

I wouldn't count Europe out too quickly. I remember coming to Brussels in the late 1980s to study the single market. Even the staunchest advocates of the 1992 project underestimate just how much the EU would change over the next 15 years. 1/2 carnegieendowment.org/europe/strat...

Europeans need a vision for the future of their continent, but they cannot create such a vision without confronting Europe's past.
Nationalism, Cosmopolitanism, and the European Project
Europe exists at the boundaries between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. The challenge is keeping the balance from tipping too far in either direction.

The usual politics has reformers challenge institutions while conservatives preserve them. What happens when the conservatives start challenging institutions as well? Who is left to preserve the status quo? The answer is pretty terrifying when you think through the implications.
Abandoning Institutionalism
People need to believe in society if they are going to believe in social institutions or institutionalism. Otherwise, they will embrace disintegration until they find a group they are willing to live with even if that group is not large enough to deal with the challenges they have to face.

Plastic capitalism is a story of financial disruption so profound that we can no longer recognized how we got here or imagine the world as it was before.
You Think You Know Financial Disruption?
What is most striking while reading the book is how much we take this new world of plastic for granted. Anyone hoping to imagine the impact of digital currencies or distributed ledger technologies should read this book as an illustration of just how transformative financial innovation can be.

Why is the ‘crisis’ so much more real now than it was in decades past?  You don’t need to do a lot of reading to learn that the relationship has never been easy.  Somehow, this time feels different. The question is whether the EU can reorganize itself as an alternative to transatlantic partnership.
Transatlantic Crisis? Why This Time is Different
The transatlantic relationship was never easy, but it was resilient. This time feels different. Two decades of analysis show why.

The challenge for the incoming Cypriot Presidency is to help European policymakers to provide reassurance as well as encouragement. There is still much for the EU to accomplish in fulfilling their ambitious agenda, but Europe’s political leaders have already taken the crucial first steps.
Europe and the Choice between Drift and Mastery
The choice Europeans face is not between change and stability; it is – to borrow from Walter Lippmann’s writing about the United States in the early 20th Century – a choice between ‘drift and mastery’.
