We know a lot about STEM attrition, but tons of students change career plans WITHIN STEM. Who are these students and what motivates their career plan changes?

I'm happy to share a new publication at Journal of Educational Psychology, which examines this topic. (1/5)

To solve this problem, there are things individual students need to do & there are things higher education & society need to do. The latter two need to decrease the pressures placed on students' time, increase the value & meaning of what they teach, & emphasize long-term learning not punishments.

I really like this study of the reasons college students move from one STEM major to another, particularly its focus on both the attractive aspects of the new major AND their disenchantments with their old major. Both parts are important. #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky

🧪 The NSF grant terminations hit women, racial & ethnic minorities, and those with disabilities the hardest.

E.g.:

--Female PIs were 58% of canceled grants (but 34% of all active grants)

--Black PIs were 17% of canceled grants (but 4% as base rate)

A closer look shows this is structural... 🧵

Are you a teacher looking to motivate your students?

Students tend to be more motivated when they believe their teacher sees their potential—in other words, when they believe their teacher has a growth mindset about student ability.

Next, we’ve got the Karabenick Conversations, a chance to grab coffee with some prolific motivation scholars. Have your questions answered, chat about your research, or just vibe with others who share your passion.
