Over 20 years working in the field of Mental Health. Fifteen years of being a psychotherapist and now a clinical supervisor and trainer too.
Always happy to learn and teach (sometimes at the same time!).
Unbelievable. Donald Trump has been invited to a state visit to the UK. We should not be rolling out the red carpet to celebrate this man. Agree? Add your name to the petition today: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/no...
No second state visit for Trump
This is UNBELIEVABLE. Keir Starmer has just handed Donald Trump a letter from King Charles, inviting him for a second state visit to the UK. It’s totally unprecedented, and I was so outraged when I he...

'Inner equanimity stems from knowing that it is not things that disturb us, but our interpretation of things.' Irvin Yalom, Staring at the Sun

This always resonates with one of my favourite poems, 'Invictus' by W.E.Henley, the last verse of which has helped me many times when life has been tough.

'As my study of theory progressed it was gradually borne in upon me that the field I had set to plough so lightheartedly was no less than the one that Freud had started tilling sixty years earlier, and that it contained all those same rocky excrescences and thorny entanglements that he

W.F.Bach and R.D.Laing between client appointments. A new happy place for me!

I haven't read this book for around 19 years (when I started my therapy training). Amazing how a book written in the 1950's is still so relevant to modern psychotherapy in the 21st century.

I love old books! Just wondering about the journey this wonderful book has been on to find its way into my office on the other side of the Atlantic makes me very happy!

'Existential phenomenology attempts to characterise the nature of a person's experience of his world and himself.'

An eternal truth, if we don't understand the other person's experience and their internal world, how can we help them heal and grow?

I suppose I don't talk about my autism that much, but I can completely understand this. I have a carefully built mask I have to maintain and wear whenever I'm dealing with people I'm not comfortable with and its a constant drain and stress. The urge to isolate and vegetate is often strong.
As a parent, this hits me in the heart: Autistic lives are marked by an often-astounding excess stress burden across the life span, and it's usually because of other people's behavior. Those of us who aren't autistic can do better. Research by Dr. Monique Botha:

Autistic creator Ashley Storrie's lauded series Dinosaur has "great charm and unassuming depth, with a sharply observed running theme about the unseen but relentless daily accommodations that neurodiverse people have to make to exist in the neurotypical world."
