This also applies to microbiology training in my experience. Initial overwhelm often followed by disproportionate confidence once antibiotic choices feel more familiar. The FRCPath exams are definitely a potent driver of the "I'll never understand this!" stage
Having trained in excess of 60 GPs - I understand the complexity & risk involved in treating patients in primary care
I know how hard it is to learn & that’s why I have come to considered conclusion that seeing undiagnosed/undifferentiated patients is not safe without training

Collaboration with @ukhsa.bsky.social, inspired by clinicians' hunches, confirms that brain abscesses are increasing in incidence in England, especially in children. Streptococcus anginosus group organisms playing a significant role. Lots to unpick!

Glad to see this article being challenged - the idea that no one has noticed a flourishing brain microbiome including staphylococci and streptococci, which are readily cultured and identified, really stretches credulity!
