I've been advised not to be prescriptive on social media. But then how to encourage behaviour change? eg: Avian flu is back in BC, killing birds & business. www.cbc.ca/lite/story/9...
Meanwhile, chicken-eaters stoke avian flu by supporting factory farming. What can we do? And how to say it nicely?

When we consume, we're emitting even more GHGs than we imagine. For that reminder I thank Lloyd Alter, who encourages us to only consume what we actually need. Thank you, @lloydalter.bsky.social, for quoting my Globe piece arguing for rationing of consumption.

How much house is enough?
In a world where we worry about upfront carbon emissions, we have to ask what is a big enough home, what is sufficient, and what is too much.

worsen climate change. abcnews.go.com/US/carbon-co.... Now we just need more climate-conscious activists and individuals to prioritize it. www.eleanorboyle.com/blog/the-obs...

Small-scale sustainable farming: It's tough, yet some farmers make it happen. That's the focus of the new film The Hands that Feed Us. Congrats to creator Devon Cooke, who I met when we were on a food-issues panel together.

So you've cut back on your meat intake or gone vegan. Here's a way to also act at a global level. The World Health Org wants feedback on what is 'optimal intake' of animal-source vs plant-source foods. Anyone can respond. The meat industry will. www.who.int/news-room/ar...

My advice to @mark-carney.bsky.social: To achieve our goals on sovereignty, climate, and more, boldly form a WWII-style War Cabinet including members of other political parties for (1) more diverse ideas, (2) more national unity, (3) less knee-jerk adversarial oppositionalism. #markcarneycanadianPM.

To stop avian flu we need to stop factory farming chickens by the billions. That's been the conclusion of numerous environmental and health analysts. Finally, the poultry industry itself is admitting that today's industrial chicken business could use a rethink. www.wattagnet.com/poultry-meat...

Yes to less -- flights, that is. Thank you, Andrew Simms. I always feel weird being a few kms above planet earth. It's unnatural to get places so fast. Now I need to wean myself off the expectation that the world is so easily available.

Youth Climate Corps. Such a solution-oriented and powerful idea. Now is the time. As well, for Canadians of all ages, I imagine a mobilization initiative for protection of our sovereignty, perhaps with national online meetings where facilitators would help citizens work together and develop skills.

Natural weather factors, ie wind, appear to spread bird flu. That undermines the poultry-industry strategy of 'biosecurity' and suggests that big animal farming just won't last.
Recalls case of farmer Percy Schmeiser vs Monsanto, over whether genetically engineered seeds had blown onto his land.
The wind may be partly to blame for bird flu spread between farms, a new study suggests
Researchers concluded that a particular case involved a distinct set of 'just right' conditions that allowed the virus to blow onto the chicken farm through the wind.

Especially when media is fragmented and divisive rather than unifying, we need the CBC.
Restore. ❤️ Defend. 🗳️ Vote.

The CBC is more than just a broadcaster—it’s the heart of our shared stories, a beacon of truth in a time of misinformation, and a vital space for Canadian arts, culture, and local news. But right now, it’s under attack.
