New investigation from Global Witness shows that, even as Russia masses troops on the Finnish borders and sends incursions into European airspace, the EU continues to import billions of dollars’ worth of nickel from a mine owned by Russia’s richest man.

Sanctions gap lets Russian-mined nickel flow to Western markets
A European loophole keeps nickel from Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel flowing to the US long after Washington banned imports of the Russian-origin metal

I have been watching the WEuros25 with my two little girls in a pub in Cornwall, and I can’t say how important it is to me that they see a full bar of all ages, sexes, and races cheering on the Lionesses and going bonkers now they won. #Historic

We knew China's rush to install solar and wind was going to be wild but WOW😮. The solar panels & wind turbines China installed in May alone, in a single month, will generarate as much electricity as:
-Poland
-Sweden
-Norway
-the UAE
-North Carolina&Maryland or
-Washington&Wyoming

Just wrapped up a press conference on the importance of addressing minerals n the climate COP process. You can catch up with it here; unfccc.int/event/nrgi-n...

I’m at Bonn asking climate negotiators to think about the climate impacts of mining for the minerals that we need for our transition. Let’s get things right now, and not make the same mistakes of the past.

As Beijing asserts itself amid global trade tensions, it is playing an ace it has kept up its sleeve for decades: control over the flow of minerals Western countries desperately need to fuel their green, digital and defense ambitions.

China’s got the world in a rare earth choke hold
Beijing’s dominance in strategically crucial minerals gives it major leverage in trade talks.

I’m at the UN offices in Bonn for the COP half way point. Amazonian communities are calling for an end to exploitation of their lands and resources. No more mining without community consultation and consent.

🚨 Critical minerals are powering the green transition – but at what cost?

COP still isn’t addressing the deforestation, corruption and land grabs linked to mineral extraction. That needs to change.

Critical minerals: The one issue COP has forgotten about
To reverse the climate crisis, COP30 must address the unforeseen consequences of the critical mineral boom, which is adding more deforestation and CO2 emissions

Seng Li from our partner, the Shannan foundation, is visiting Brussels from Myanmar to talk about the huge harms caused by mining for heavy rare earths in his region. Also hearing from communities in Jujay, Argentina and in France.

We kicked off our Myanmar advocacy tour with a meeting with MEP @yverougstraete.bsky.social today in the EP. It was a great start to our trip meeting someone who really gets that responsible mining practices can be a boon to European industry & security.
