Associate professor at University of Leeds, UK. I research volcanoes, air & environmental pollution. I am Icelandic and I knit my own lopapeysas
Excited to be in Iceland for a PhD viva tomorrow where I'm one of the opponents! It's also the first face-to-face fully public viva that I've done so there's extra excitement about that english.hi.is/doctoral-def... Doctoral Defense in Geology - Nicolas Levillayer | University of Iceland

The current #eruption on Reykjanes is causing remarkable #airpollution in urban areas. SO2 in Reykjavík has exceeded that measured during the large eruption of Holuhraun in 2014. Picture of the volcanic pollution from my window 🧵

#Eruption nr 9 in the Reykjanes-Svartsengi system started on 16 July. The plume of SO2 and fine particulates is causing #airpollution in North and North West Iceland, which is a bit unusual. Also it's reaching the East coast of Greenland today! Image credit #Iceland Met Office

Our paper authored by the International Volcanic Health Hazard Network got an award for the most cited publication 👏👏👏 #IAVCEI2025

I didn't get a spot on the #IAVCEI2025 CERN tour so instead did other things Swiss. Hilly bike ride with stunning views of the alps followed by floating far far down the Rhône with my stuff in a dry bag

Congratulations to Claire, our Leeds PhD graduate!
Huge congratulations to Claire Harnett on receiving the IAVCEI George Walker Award! 🌋 Your groundbreaking work in volcano modeling is inspiring — well deserved recognition!

Please come to my talk at 11:15 in R380. If social media + eruptions weren't exciting enough, this room also has excellent A/C #IAVCEI2025

Hello #IAVCEI2025! Temperatures are approaching that of a lava flow - a fan was a genius idea

A stunningly beautiful weekend in Zurich and Lucerne. Now onwards to #IAVCEI2025 in Geneva

I treated myself with a day in the Lake District to celebrate end of teaching term. I did the scrambly climb up Great Gable and the weather was an absolute dream, no wind whatsoever and clear skies. What a treat!

My colleagues in Iceland are very kindly collecting samples for me as we speak. We have a NERC urgency grant to investigate chemistry of air pollution where lava burns infrastructure. #iceland #volcano #eruption

Eruption nr 7 started near Grindavik at 23:30 yesterday evening. Rather unexpectedly this time. Homes are safe but Grindavik road and hot water pipe from power plant have been cut by lava. Pic from my parents window in Reykjavik #iceland #volcano

It's now been a year since the evacuation of Grindavik when a huge magma intrusion pushed its way underneath the town. My colleague Ragnar Heiðar Þrastarson at the Icelandic volcano observatory (IMO) shared a powerful memory of that day 🧵1/n

Once upon a time I went #bikepacking through #Patagonia. It started with a very painful ride up Osorno #volcano followed by 2 weeks and ~1100 km through Chile and Argentina. I kept a travel blog but didn't get round to posting it. Until now :) medium.com/@e.ilyinskaya

The @adalovelaceday.bsky.social was just wonderful, huge thanks for inviting me to speak! The other speakers were genuinely amazing, and I felt happy with how my talk went. Couldn't ask for more. Am unforgettable evening!

We've had over 10 months of eruptions near Grindavík in Iceland. New research on the lavas erupted from the fissures that have opened since December 2023 suggest that the magma storage under the peninsula is more complicated that we assumed: www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth...
Magma Feeding the Eruption in Iceland Has a Complicated Past
The eruption at Sundhnúkur in Iceland has been going for over 10 months and we're starting to understand how the magmatic system feeding it works.

Very cool paper hot off the press in Science on the Reykjanes eruptions 2023-2024. They might seem very similar at first glance but they are tapping different magma lenses www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

A volcano near the now evacuated Icelandic town of Grindavík has woken up after 800 years. But why has it started erupting again now? How long can the lava barriers protect homes? And what is going on underground? 8 Oct at the Ri & online! #ALD24 https://findingada.com/events/

Very excited and honoured to be one of the Ada Lovelace Day speakers at the Royal Institute in a couple of weeks! I'll be taking about #Iceland and it's ongoing #volcano eruptions #ALD24
The volcano near Grindavík in Iceland has woken up after 800 years. Volcanologist Dr Evgenia Ilyinskaya will explain how the locals are trying to protect their town and what's happening underground, at #ALD24, 8 Oct at the Ri & online! https://findingada.com/events/

My first Bluesky post is a new paper alert👋 We used Twitter (RIP!) and AI natural language processing and showed that well-behaved 🌋 #volcano #eruptions can invoke lots of positive emotions nhess.copernicus.org/articles/24/...
Brief communication: Small-scale geohazards cause significant and highly variable impacts on emotions
Abstract. The impact of geohazards on the mental health of local populations is well recognised but understudied. We used natural language processing (NLP) of Twitter (now known as X) posts (n=10 341)...
